Im currently building a new varanid enclosure it has a 5ftx5ftx45cm base that is built up another 12inches higher its top is completely open (bird wire) so my question is heating wise what would be best i was thinking 2 100w or even 150w High mercury vapour bulbs...... ill be useing a duel tube 4ft fluro fitting for photo period
my question was would 100 or 150w bulbs be best in this largeish open cage and placement wise should i aim to put these close together or maby one at ither end of cage?

hi kenshin, its hard to tell, depends on your rooms back ground temps ect,are u heating the top section only?????,what will the floor temps be,id be having some heating at ground level as well, even just to get a good gradient from top to bottom, your cage is sounding rather big,im assuming its for tristis monitors?????u have enough floor space to have heating down low at one end of your cage as well as up high,id give them a basking spot down low and up high of 60 to 70 degrees, gives them choices and extra basking spots to so the animals have more options

yea the cage will house a decent sized group of tristis tristis............ ok so ill run a 150w on the inside aimed on a tile-stack at one end and at the other ill have branches getting fairly close to another 150w sitting on the wire above the cage......... both spots should hit 70c fairly easily (especially the tilestack)
