RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Venemous handling course

I think you have to be registered with NPWS for snake removing. Last
I heard they stopped giving out permits unless you were with some wildlife group or for occupational safety purposes.
You can't simply just get one cause you want it.
That what I was told by a registered snake remover person thingy whateva you call em.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Venemous handling course

Jonny I dont necessarily want (or need?) a certificate... i just want to save the snakes. When a farmer walks into a shed and sees a snake with several pullet (young chicken) shaped bumps in it, they hardly are going to call WIRES and wait until they can get there. If i knew how to handle them i could at least save them, and take them outside and away from the sheds. Unfortunately many farmers have the old attitude "the only good snake is a dead snake" and i'm doing what (little) i can to change that.

Re: RE: Re: RE: Venemous handling course

[Hello Jimmy I'll let you know. I'm not sure if you need to be "hooked" up to attend the course, but I was advised that I may have to go due to work commitments. PM you details if or when I know though! [/quote]

Please let me know as well. I would like to inform my stepsons school that any incidents with snakes to call someone rather than using the shovel and if they happen to call me than I would do my damndest to move or trap the snake until a trained person came along.

Rumour says that the school found 3 RBBS's and put them to the shovel. Rumour only and coming from a 12 year old who heard it from a 12 year old etc etc. I only heard this today when my stepson came home from school. I will follow it up on Monday.

P.S. If this is fact I can understand the school taking urgent action to prevent injury to the kids but I would be sure that the snakes were doing their best to be inconspicuous.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Venemous handling course

Wanting to get them out of the neighbours shed while a commendable reason isnt going to get you onto a rescue groups course. They are hoping for a bit more committment generally. Because of the demand for places the preferences go to there own members first and generally the area that the applicant covers.
Because Wires covers the whole state they tend to run more courses and if you want to do there advanced course then they require that you have completed their handling course.
SMWS runs 2 to 3 courses a year and gives preference to members. They do train people from emergency services and other industies that can cover the insurance and workers comp aspect.
We only give out rescues to members of rescue groups or individuals with General License and their own insurance.
So if Shermy came to our course as a private individual and got bitten he is basically on his own. We'd roll him into the undergrowth and go home.
Not really I guess but he'd have no insurance coverage and would have to sue us. We come under Federal law so he'd have to go to the High court and lodge $50k surity bond and then we'd petition to have him lodge a furth $50k to cover our costs in the vent that he loses etc.
So. as a member of a rescue group you get to bypass al that and have insurance and compensation.

You will need to become a member of a wildlife group to be trained by a certified (NPWS endorsed) reptile team.

Jungle,

I think there are ads for venemous reptile handling courses in the Reptiles Australia Mag. Those will teach you how to handle them but i dont think u get a certification.

Agamidae at Brissy snake catchers does snake removal so I'm sure it would be worth asking him the procedures. Real nice bloke too. It would be good if you informed the school that it was actually illegal to kill snakes, and give them a contact to call. Be careful of children's rumours, the truth could be that someone ate three red gummy snakes and turned out to be the story that you heard. I was a kid once...
