hey i was just wondering if anyone on this site breeds or keeps elapids and lives close to the gold coast. or knew of anyone that breeds and keeps elapids. im looking to expand on my collection and just wanted to get to know a few people that keep them and find out what is involved and what the process is. any feedback would be awesome.

Hi there,
I am a WIRES member in NSW and have a Tiger snake (Notechis Scutatus) and a Copperhead (Austrelaps Superbus) in care at the moment and they are almost ready for release.
I am qualified to handle and care for venomous snakes and other than having these qualifications you can only hold elapids if you hold a Class 2 licence put out by National Parks And Wildlife Services.
If you go to their website you will find a section on licencing which will explain to you the process of obtaining such a licence.
I am not sure about your state, however in NSW you have to have held a Class one licence for two years before obtaining your class two category one licence which will allow you to keep mildly venomous snakes such as red bellies and yellow face whip snakes.....category two takes another year to obtain and you need to prove via references that you have held in captivity category one reptiles. On category two you can keep elapids such as Death Adders.
After another year and more references you can obtain categoy one which will allow you to keep eastern browns and inland taipans among the few including the rough scaled snake.
Joining an organisation such as WIRES can benefit you at reference time and is a very rewarding job especially when you can save the life of a sick or injured animal.

its a little different in QLD i have read up on getting a specialist licence which allows you to keep elapids but in order to get that it involves getting 2 references or a reference and a quilified snake handling course. what i am trying to do is find local elapid keepers that might be willing to show me the ropes and teach me what is involved with dealing with elapids and that sort of thing. i realise the risk involved and understadably people arent very helpful when it comes to the topic of elapids. its just been difficult finding someone that is willing to help me out although i understand the risk it is frustrating being a novice and pretty much having everyone i come across offer little help. i thought posting a thread may get me somewhere seems i have sort of hit a brick wall so to speak.

I understand how it works in QLD, WIRES could still help you reach your goal, You could do a course, and get to know other people doing rescuse for wires theres your second ref
