vermiculite?

hi pretty new at this. i've been reading up on things and read about this substrate call vermiculite.
what exactly is it ?
is it the only thing that can be used for incubation?
where do you get it from?

you get it from the nursery, i think its designed to start seeds of due to its ability to retain water, if you have ever bought a can of seeds (similar to a salt shaker) the vermiculite in them is the finer grade
