I've been having a discussion with another member about vet visits. I'm interested if members would be kind enough to share any experiences good or bad on their vet trips. I know we have discussed vet locations etc. But I'm interested in maybe some of the costs involved? How often do you take your herps to the vet (yearly/ half yearly etc ???) I've yet to take mine as she's only young (8 mths). Should young snakes/ lizards be taken to the vet initially for worming or is there something that can be done at home? Preventive maintenance LOL.

I only take my snakes to the vet if they are sick. I can do most of the worming etc myself. For the Brisbane people - I use Clayton Knight at Deception Bay, as does just about everyone else.

So you’re suggesting that it shouldn't be something that's done routinely? The snakes look hardy enough I suppose. I was reading in post from awhile ago (worms) that things like panacur and ivermectin (I don’t have a clue about either of these!) are recommended if you are going to worm the reptiles yourself (apparently ivermectin is also good for mites?). I’d imagine you’d be able to buy it from a vet after a visit. Has anyone heard of these? I know Jungle.Inc has (as this is where I read this from), but I haven’t seen him post here in recent times to ask him about it.

I wouldn't recommend anybody using Ivomec - VERY potent stuff.
I use Worm Rid on everything as a safe-guard against worms. If I buy something that does have worms, I either take it to Clayton, or just give it a few doses of Worm Rid, depending on my financial state at the time.

I been using worm-rid for about a year now and it seems to work very well.
I recently got some darwins that were full of worms, i put them through a course of 6 doses and it's cleaned them up totally.

i havent actually used it springherp but it says this on that link...
"Reptile Science Worm-Rid can either be added in the correct dosage to the reptile’s food, either live, frozen or processed. It also can be given directly to the mouth by using a syringe with a dosing needle, both of these products can be purchased from URS in the husbandry equipment section. Use at the rate of 0.4ml (8 drops) per Kg of the bodyweight. After the initial dose the treatment can be safely repeated in 2 week intervals."

One small word of warning... a friend bought some worm rid from URS last month and it expires in October.
