And how does that work, ie is it volounteer, does the person with the snake in the backyard pay a fee, or does the government pay a fee for each snake removed?

Depends on which state you're in. In the N.T the government pays, but I know in S.A and here in Vic we charge. There is 1 catcher near me who has a council contract so the council pays him when people in that area call but usually the home owner pays.

Thanks for clearing that up elapid, Ive always wondered about that. Do most of the snakes get relocated or are they generally euthanised?

If it's endemic to the area it gets relocated, if not it usually goes to the Lost Reptiles Home. Exotics get handed over to the DSE and usually euthanised. Mortally injured animals are obviously euthanised as well.

I actually didn't think they made all that many visits to tell you the truth. Ive always just assumed that they were rather short staffed and that their time would be used for visiting places where complaints had been made or that seemed to be 'dodgy'. Its actually refreshing to see that they do make checks!

So far I haven't, I've caught quite a few escaped pets not to mentions rubber snakes, bits of material blowing in the wind at night (yes that was fun at 1am ) and it's amazing how many people are scared of Blue Tongues. Quite a few other catchers I know of have caught boas, corns and other exotics.

Not a Problem ssssnakeman, yep, it's amazing what we get called out for.
The peice of material job was partly my fault. After getting the phone call at 1am I asked them if it was moving, silly me, should have asked if it was only moving when the wind blew. In his defence, just about the entire street were up watching this thing and at 1am it possibly, sort of ,kind of looks snake-ish.

re Vic

Same in all states,if you get the "this is just a routine inspection" LOLZ that means your on the list of dodgey suspects or inh many cases someone that dont like you has made a complaint to whatever they call themselves that day in your state or territory. They usually come in little groups and display a lack of knowledge in reptiles in general, the last time they came to my place for a visit i wasnt home and my wife let them in and signed the record for the visit. Now i was spewing about it cause i am the license holder not her and besides that i had little kids in the house and i cant have strangers of any description coming in when ime not there. As for the catch and release i had one of those licenses and a photographic one,fee for each license and i didnt charge for calls but i should have, what if they didnt have the money
