Not sure although I did look at it for my beardies and asked the fellow at the landscaping show what was in it and apparently the real white play sand has silicone. They had about nine different sands and after we went through them all only one was suitable and it was a natural sand with nothing in it (can't remember what it was called but it's a Grey color. I just didn't feel silicone would be good when constantly getting in there digestive system.

Hate to pick nits here but sand is made out of silicon.

I'd be worried if your sand didn't have any silicon in it

Silicone? I don't know about that, but if it is safe for kids it is surely safe for Beardies.

buggers me I ain't no sand expert. I just went through with the guy what each sand he had there had in it (more looking for things such as lime stone etc) which obviously the brickies sands etc had. I just thought well I know my beardies get so much sand when there eating there food (adults not juvies) and doing that every day couldn't' be good for you after a while (eating silicone that is). lol I know my kids haven't eaten sand before and we live at the beach but I'm sure there's some out there that do, I just wouldn't think they would eat it on a daily basis. But like I said I don't know, no sand expert here sorry

I seriously doubt the sand with have silicon in it's element form like found in computer chips and stuff like that.
Common sand is SiO2 or Alumina (silicon dioxide - think carbon dioxide, but with silicon instead of carbon).
What you get on the beach is mixed with dirt, bits of calcium from shells and other rubbish.

I don't think there'll be any nasties in the washed sand you can buy, unless it does state it has lime or whatever in it.
As for digesting it, as long as it doesn't block them up, some extra roughage now and then would probably be good for them. Especially if they have quite a lot of greens.
Think gorillas and swallowing stones to aid in digestion of leaves.

Well that's my scientific (Chemist) viewpoint.
I'm by no means a biologist or reptile expert.

Brickies sand is called loam, it has a clay content in it so it rolls.
Renderers sand is just washed, clean, clay free sand so it doesn't shrink (crack) as it dries.
Fill sand is just that, unwashed sand for like under slabs , pavers etc.
They come in all manner of locality names like sydney sand, yellow loam river sand etc.

For the reps I would use renderers sand, washed, clean, maybe even seived.

Hello

Hello,

The washed & sifted playsand is the best, I agree. Do not use anything like reptisand, vitasand or calcisand because that will clump like cement which will ultimately cause impactions, most of the time.
The regular sand normally passes right through them & does not clump.

Cool, well stumpy is mostly hand fed anyway and any food that is left in there will be on a plate thing he has so I think I'll go ahead and get him something to play in!

Thanks for all the replies, it's wonderful to have a place where you can get info like this!
