I have seen some around the creek at my mothers property in Berry so my guess is that they should be fine kept in the Illawarra

no they dont get sick easily, like eastern waterdragons there amazingly hardy,a big male will get around the 90 cm range, possably longer,i find there best housed outdoors when they get some size to them,i keep my adult easterns and gippys outside year round in melb so they will be fine in your neck of the woods, there not really easily handled, there are exceptions but as a rule will thrash about when held, great lizards though
