weird movements

hi all,
last night when feeding the juvie coastal, i noticed when i offered him the fuzzy with the tongs he was making a weird rocking movement. he was half out of his hide in the strike position, slightly rocking back and forth. would not take the food out of the tongs at all, like normal. as soon as i dropped it tho he smashed it straight away, no problems. has any one observed this motion in any of thier herps and if so is this normal behaviour. no health problems at all, eating regular, good slough, very health looking. any thoughts are much appricieated. ash

RE: weird movements

he was probably just rocking to head to judge distance
i have herd that rats with red eyes do the same beacuse there vision isnt the best and they have to rock b4 jumping so they can judge the distance

RE: weird movements

its probly because it was streched out trying to get the foods, so it would be trying to maintain balance

RE: weird movements

A lot of predators move their heads from side-to-side to assist in judging distances before pouncing - owls especially, reptiles of course.

RE: weird movements

Nothing to worry about at all, I've seen quite a few of my snakes do the same thing and as Jamie said, it's a common trait among predators.

RE: weird movements

Lol well then maybe he was  They do all have their own quirky habits at times. I know of some who wont take it unless you drop it on the floor and leave it and some who basically expect it to be dropped into their mouths and would probably even rather you assisted swallowing too

RE: weird movements

Snakes don't focus the same way we do, the movement from side to side and back and forth is just them focusing and judging the distance. My larger BHP does it a lot, I often think he might be lining me up instead.
