What do the different departments do with seized animals?

We know what the do in NSW - Jeff organises a ballot and well behaved herpers in NSW, who have their returns up to date, get to enter.

Obviously exotics get destroyed but what of seized animals that can be legally held by the public and cannot be returned to the wild.

In Victoria I know that non indigenous animals "collected" by your local snake catcher, if they cannot be returned to their owners, can be sold by the catcher.

What happens to animals siezed by by customs in other states? Where do they end up?

Yes, QLD animals are all offered to members of QWPA (QLD wildlife parks association). Privates do not even get a look in. Even then the bigger parks are given priority over small parks and private exhibitor/demonstrator licencees as they are "more able to cater for special needs". When will they learn that zoos may be bigger but they are not always better and they really do not want another half a dozen noisy miners or blue tongue lizards. The end result is a lot of stuff sits off limits until it dies of old age.

do you think there is a possibility to contact the wildlife parks about the potentially unwanted animals? Or are they not allowed to transfer the animals like the NSW regulations?

They are allowed to legally but QLD NPWS makes such a big deal about "has it been offered to every zoo in Australia first" that they just can't be bothered with the red tape involved.

I'll give you a perfect example.
About three months ago, a "wildlife carer" rocked up at work with a Blue winged Kookaburra. A friend had given it to her to care fore. She had no idea it was a Blue winged kooka and wanted to get it better and release it locally. I explaned to her that it could not have come in from a local source and to find out where it originated from. Her friend, who made two short planks look like a computer, claimed we were the first vet she could get to after she picked the bird up in Airlie beach , a 1000kn north of here. I promptly suggested I would find an appropriate carer for the bird. The bird was physically undamaged but as a result of a head knock had diminished eyesight. Ordinarily this would induce euthanasia but as it was a special bird for this area I contacted NPWS and asked if I could send it to a local demonstrator who was seeking a hand tame kooka for school group talks. I was told no, it had to go through QWPA and they said they would organise it. Two weeks later, kooka is voluntarily eating 10 weeaner mice a day but have not heard from NPWS. The lady handling it had gone on holidays and would get onto it in 4 weeks when she returned. I chucked a wobbly and said let me send the bird to the demonstrator (who has peregrines, black kites etc.) and they said that person was somehow not qualified to keep a kooka. Thet organised another carer to pick the bird up. This carer kept the bird for 8 weeks, fore feeding it daily as apparently it was incapable of eating on its own until the QWPA meeting declared that the bird was not much use to anybody and allocated it to the demonstrator that I wanted to send it too in the first place. And people wonder why I am sometimes bitter with the NPWS.

Yeah, NPWS are ****s occasionally....But some of them are great. One in particular, sue-ellen is great! If anyone in the NT contacts npws for any reason, ask for sue-ellen bredl.

Im not sure what happens to animals up here, I have been told that a lot are euthanised, but i have NOT been told that by a NPWS employee, so I cannot confirm whether or not it is true. The problem is that there arent that many keepers or zoos up here, that the animals could be given too.

I for one would volunteer to take in any reptiles confiscated . If its something dead boring like beardies or carpets, id just give em away to newbies!!! Hehehe i hope someone from NPWS is reading this!

If I was anyone in NT NPWS you'd be "persona non grata" from now on Brodie but thanks, I also now know what the W stands for.

I thinks you have got to realise that a lot of the people in NPWS have their hands tied when it comes to stuff like through the amount of legislation and bull*^$% that they have to go through. Majority of enviromental jobs relies upon the person/s to wade through vast amount of this rubbish before being able to do anything and more often then not with limited resources and man-power due to the government putting in small amounts of funding to these departments, and quite often the poor buggers just stop caring (I don't blame them).
