What Percentage Vermiculite to Water?

Just wondering what percentage vermiculite to water people use. Generally it is 50/50 by weight, although I have heard of some using a dryer mixture or does it depend on the type of snake?

Also I have heard people use a layer of Perlite on top of the Vermiculite. Who does this and does it affect the vermiculite to water%.

Thanks.

For most carpets & water pythons they generally use 50/50.

I've heard Black-headed pythons, olives, womas and Children’s pythons eggs are more sensitive to moisture, so a drier 60/40 vermiculite mix is recommended. Or another thing I've heard is using a 50/50 perlite mix, as perlite holds a lot less moisture than vermiculite.

i got all this information from Southern X Reptiles website in their articles section. It is well worth reading.

I have used a 50;50 mix for some years but found it a bit too wet. Trueblue advised a 60;40 mix is better and I found he is right.

I use a drier mix than 50/50 for most lizard eggs I've had, good results and seems to be better to avoid fungi problems.

Thanks, I thought a lot of people were now going for a drier mixture.

But that is really inaccurate...for eg. If Hugsta mixes his vermiculite as you suggest and I do the same.....I am sure Hugsta could squeeze more water out of the vermiculite than a little female like me could. So that would be really inaccurate in my opinion. I used that method for Forest Dragons eggs and it worked ok but i won't be trying that approach on my womas.

Simone.
