I think you might have trouble controlling the temps, if the hole goes all the way through to the outside. Adelaide can have some pretty nasty heatwaves.

Were you going to cover the hole outside and insulate it?

Maybe a Siamese Fighting fish! That's a really tiny space to put anything in - not deep enough once you put a hide, log etc in.

Or you could have a fish tank there and keep some hardy goldfish?

If its too small in area, and access for a fish or herp tank restrcted, and fluctuating temps possibly a hassle, there is always the option of a group of hardy small potplants. They can look really good if planted in a long thin 'trough' style pot and cascading over the edge. A light could always been installed over it (either inside the top of the hole or on the wall), and it could be made into a feature in the lounge. It was just an idea.

you said its about 20cm deep, 30cm wide, 40cm high. About the same size as a big box of weet-bix. I dont know how you can get a gradient for heating in a small space like that. With frogs you'll have the same cleaning issues as fish. I just prefer my animals to have as much space as I can give them not jam them into a tiny box. How can you provide good ventilation if they are set back in the wall? Not saying it cant be done just that I wouldn't.

access to a herp tank would be fine (thats why i made it 40cm) its just that if it was full of water it would way ALOT.
would it be ok for 1 frog?

Probably ok for a frog or two. you'll have to do a bit of research, I'm not very familiar with their exact requirements.
