Who uses Crushed walnut shell as a floor covering for pythons? Is it a good substrate

I was told this crushed walnut shell is a very good flooring as it is very absorbent and easy to scoop out etc.

What I want to know is....can it harm a python? If it's digested I was told it is ok, but what about scratching etc while pooping..

I saw it in the shop and it kinda looks like couscous. (pasta)

I use crushed walnut, and have not had any problems with it. I don not feed Luke on it though. Just a bit worried he might swallow some.

Hi staffsrule....another question, can you easily purchase this walnut shell? The store where I saw it seems to be having trouble with getting it in stock. Do you know of a store that will freight it for me?

Oh and I was planning on feeding my newbie (when i get it) out of the tank also...So swallowing would not be a problem..

check out reptiles aus, vol3 issue 2, it has a good article on substrates (flooring).
i use aquarium gravel cos it looks good and is easy to clean (if u have only a few enclosures).
just make sure it is smooth and that the pieces are not too big to cause an obstruction if swallowed.
i've heard sand can cause irritations to the snake and cause ostructions if swallowed, but not sure.

fake grass, outdoor carpet what ever you call it is great I'm using it now.Cut a couple of pieces for each enclosure and wash one while the other is being used and just keep rotating them. Have had no problems with it !

Sounds cool Hawke, fake grass looks good also. I am leaning towards fish gravel around the water area and grass around warm area. Should work ok..Gives Precious some variety in her new home, whenever I get her..I'm Starting to get very impatient.

I've used it for years with my childrens without any problems. I feed her in her enclosure and it hasn't harmed her at all.

I have heard of animals dying and when the autopsy was performed they where full of compacted crushed walnut shells.
