Why pet stores shouldnt be allowed to sell herps

just went in to my local pet store, wont say the name but if you want it pm me, anyway they have a beardie, looks likes it about 1yr old but its rear left leg if deformed from calcium deficiency. Insted of the normal knee its bent backwards. They also have 3 adult spotters which they are hoping to breed, only problem is they are kept on kitty litter, the heatcord is just sitting in the cage and goes the entire length so they have no temp gradient. I have seen the cage littered with poop and bits of skin and they normall have large patches of skin left from bad sheds. Grr they really pee me off

yeah i work at a petshop and don't think we should sell herps. i've got enough to look after with the fish, cats, dogs, hermit crabs and insects not to meation the customers which take up most of the da. herps require such a high level of care most shops simplely don't have the time or staff number to provide the care and close observation they need. if petshops sell herps i reackon they should be only selling herps and have some kind of limit in how many they can have in at any one point in time, or not have them like in NSW.

herps are just not a good money maker if you look at it, they require such a high level of care that you would have to have a hug make up to make a decent profit if you were investing the staff hours and therefore wage they require.

Yeah. I think that there should be regular checks on pet shops dealing herps?? good idea or bad? but if you were a pet shop dealing herps, you should have the neccesary equiptment to keep your herps healthy. So i guess that they should have regular inspections.

The shop here sells for top dollar, eg- yearling childrens for $500 and coastal hatchies
for $350 + and we know that they only paid $85 for the coastals, so they are making good money on them with out the right husbandry

Ok i work in a petshop in emerald called highlands pets and produce...as yet we dont sell reptiles...there is so much your staff have to go through to get a licence to sell them...so basicaly what it comes too is the people how are incharge of them are not reptile lovers...where as you can walk into another petshop where the people who look after them do love reptile./..and you will see the difference!!

If you set up the enclosures properly and spent a bit of money initially then it wouldnt be that hard to care for them.Birds are harder.IMO

I'll agree to that xander. How could reptiles be more maintenance than birds. As far as I see, my herps are the lowest maintenance pet I have ever owned & I don't neglect them. I spend daily time with them but they are so easy compared to other animals.

Our local Pets Paradise store on the Gold Coast sell snakes and lizards and both owners and staff are reptile owners. The enclosures are always spotless and all animals look extremely healthy and happy.
