Do what my dad did to me when i had my first snake BTS (WC).

he called W.I.R.E.S (explained the situation) and they came and took it and relesed it.

I was pretty pi$$ed off with him at the time, but he didnt want a 11yo with a ven.

ohwell that was 16 years ago and im over it now....

G'day mate,

It's a tough situation. It depends whether you want to look at it legally, or morally. I suggest a bit of both...

Legally, what he is doing is definitely wrong. What you can do, is contact the EPA, and they will supply you with a form. You detail what you know, his address, and any other information. They will then get in contact with your cousin, most probably seize the snakes, and he will then go to court. He won't go to jail, but he will probably cop a fine.

Morally, what he is doing isn't bad. It's what all keepers were doing 10-15 years ago when there weren't any permits. The species he is keeping are very common, and their husbandry requirements are simple.

Like I said, it's a tough situation and it really is your call.

Cheers

Jonno

Jonno,

I dont think you have to go as far as the EPA, like i said it will only take a quick word from a WIRES/ ARK whatever to go and have a chat with him and im sure he will surrender the animals, no court, no paper trail, no dramas.

If he is informed of what he is doing and the legale risks of it im sure he will be fine.

G'day mate,

You might want to read my latest post in "Saved a snake today" in the Australian Snakes forum. Releasing the animals, especially considering they have been in captivity, will only result in them dying.

If you want the animals out of his care, then you can either suggest that he surrenders them, or inform EPA.

Cheers

Jonno

G'day mate,

If we had a WIRES group, that would definitely be an option, but I am pretty sure SEQ is void of anything like that.

Cheers

So a 5 yo coastal (For examlpe) that has been caught and put in a fish tank for 3 months ( example again) will die if its released

I had a call out to a dog wich dug up a red belly in winter got bitten and died, i went out caught the snake, kept it for the remaing winter months and released it a few months later when the weather warmed up a bit....did it die?

I am not having a go but at what point of human contact do you think renders the snake unable to survive in the wild again

If thats the case, then he obviosly does not have them for the right reason.

He just needs the wind put up him from someone with a bit of authority ( even if there pretending ), Jonno might know some near you one.

Just let it go and worry about your own snakes. As long as he is looking after them OK you don't need to worry, its not like he is wholesale harvesting or anything.

Legally yes it's wrong and he would get a small fine, definitely wouldn't go to jail. Morally I don't see it as any big deal, it's not like it doesn't happen all the time. Loads of people have WC snakes, the only difference is they came from people who were given a permit to take them. Just tell him to release them where he found them, if not don't stress about it.

ask him if he would like hid kids (if or when he has any) snatched from the local park and taken somewhere (kidnapped) and put in a box and showed around to people......

i knwo its not the same, but its the same in principle!

Yea I wouldnt be getting too worked up about it. You just got to decide wether you really want to do someting or not. If not, forget about it. Eventually someone who see's the pythons and knows they are WC will tell someone else who will tell someone else and eventually he will be caught out. Especially if he is braggin they are WC and feeding live WC GTF's for a show.
