Howdy, I have talked about this with a few blokes. Do you think Snake Ranch breeding pythons in larger quantities is going to drive down prices?
I suppose you could say that they are snakes that would have been in circulation anyway but being under the one roof changes things a bit. What do you reckon?
This isn't a shot at snake ranch in any way. I just thought it would make a good discussion.

I doubt it will make much difference, people will always want a certain line of snake or a particular pattern or colour and if Snake Ranch or anyone else doesn't produce them they will go elsewhere.
If they started pumping out BHP's for $500 then I would say yes but I don't see that happening.

i think when we start to see very large numbers of certain species the price will drop, take womas for eg
snake ranch will no doubt be producing large numbers of quality animals and this can only be a good thing, even better if some species are made more affordable

I don't think that Snake Ranch is about pumping out hundreds and hundreds of snakes into the hobby, but more so providing those top quality - limited snakes, including specific localities, traits and morphs. Like albino's, hypo and hyper animals. Its a matter of time before the hobby booms like the USA has, it's already starting now. And the more morphs and alike animals being produced I think WILL be the future of the hobby, not the standard, wild looking snakes like a brown coastal, or a gray phase bearded dragon.

I agree with MrSpike. The money will be with the top end herp morphs etc, and the "boring" ones will phase out of circulation. In the USA/Europe who buys a "normal" leopard gecko or corn snake nowadays. Dont notice many wild form budgies in avaries either or the wild form of the goldfish. Man will always manipulate the animals he breeds, and will always be chasing the elusive new variant, so the market place adapts...

I personally don't think the snake ranch will have any major effect on prices lowering. If you look at their current pricelist they are all pretty much at the current market value.
If they have animals that they can't sell then they may lower their prices to move them quicker, however, this is no different to you or I. Have a look at the trends from previous seasons. You will see the not sold hatchies sell for cheaper as the season progresses.
In saying this though, if you want a specific or better quality animal or first choice then you will be prepared to pay that extra $$. This i think will continue to stay the norm.

I think snake ranch is more involved with breeding small amounts of "high quality" animals rather than mass production of the average stuff.

Dont get me wrong, if a particular animal is in demand, albeit "normal" then it will stay available. However all captive breeding is selective-us humans put the animals together, so consciously or subconsiously the forms will change genetically, and will also be affected by the changes afforded by the captive environment ie pin head syndrome. Subtly over time there will always be a drift away from the wild type.

Good points there Glim and Spike.
South Oz has Southern Cross, Vic has Pailsy and well I guess the cane toads have Trueblue and now us cockroaches have Snake Ranch. Plenty of room in our growing hobby. Time will tell hey.
