Willy Woma - Back to his best

Here are a few pics of my Woma, he had a really bad dose of RI that lasted for over 3 months. Now he is back better than ever. I think he looks great (although beware if you are prescribed BAETRIL for RI, the injections will scar your snake - but, better a living animal with scars than a dead one without). Anyway, here he is, had him out in the sunshine and he loved it so much that he 'disposed' of the remnants of a rat he ate a fornight ago. LOL

What do you think of his colouration?

He is a Ti Tree locale Woma, (Would like a female Ti Tree if anyone knows of one available) I haven't measured him but I think about three feet, I only maintain weight records and he is 975g. The symptoms of RI were, bubbling from nose and mouth, lethargy, evidence of old mucous around nostrils, refusing to eat, and a lot of mucous in his mouth and upper resp tract. It cost me about $500 - $600 in vet bills but we beat it, I just wasn't going to give up on him. He is the best natured snake ever.

MrMikk - My Diamond is still getting over an RI - I was prescribed Fortrum as opposed to Baytril - the Vet told me that she usually finds that Baytril hurts the snakes more (she gets way more bites injecting Baytril than Fortrum) and that Fortrum is a broader spectrum medication - I haven't noticed any scarring from the injections of Fortrum...

...anyway, great to hear that your Woma is recovering - quick question - did you notice that he used his tongue less while he was crook?

mrmikk, i swear by baytril. baytril can damage and scar if used incorrectly for example if injecting it subcautaneously. baytril should be injected intermuscular in the anterior portion of the body. If a large animal with a large dose split the doe over a couple of injection sites. I learnt this lesson myself many years ago with a water python.

Hi Aslan,

We gave him 8 fortrum injections to begin with, noticed a very small, initial improvement, but the symptoms soon returned to the level they were to begin with. We then moved to Baetril, the vet advised this wasn't her first chance, but as the fotrum wasn't having an effect, we gave this a try. He then had 23 Baetril injections and we still didn't knock it over. We then swabbed him and found the bug was susceptible to Tobramycin, he had 13 doses of this via a nebuliser, and we still didn't knock the RI out, we then continued with the Tobramycin via neb in the morning and administered Baetril via neb in the evening. He had in total 21 x Tobramycin via neb and 10 Baetril via neb. He still was not over it and I was concerned at the large amount of anti-biotics he had received. I then neb'd him with distilled water, and shortly thereafter he shed and that was the turning point, it was quite a marked transition from a sick snake to 100%.

Sorry, bit long winded but answering your question, yes he did use his tongue a lot less when he was sick.
