win $500 showing yoru herps

Just a reminder that the Mac Herps show is on Feb 18th. Application forms will be avaialable on our web site later this week. We are offering $1,000 in cash prozes with the main prize of $500 going to the best display as judged by the people attending the show.

There is also a junior soccer tournament on at the same place on the same day so we expect a lot of young kids coming in and learning about our hobby. This also means that they wont necessarily be impressed by rare and expensive species. A good carpet python display may be enough to sway their votes.

Dr Robert Johnson, who played a major role in developing the NPWS Hygiene Protocol for the control of disease in captive snakes (available here http://www3.environment.nsw.gov.au/p...col_snakes.pdf ) has kindly volunteerd his services to establish our hygiene protocol so you can be confident that the spread of disease will be as minimal as possible (and certainly less than a trip to the vet would be). For more info on Dr Johnson visit www.reptilevet.com.au

Anthony Stimson from Australian Wildlife Displays has also offered that each category winner will be offered a place in his expo at Castle Hill in May. Fro more info on this event go to www.wildexpo.com.au

This will be a huge event. We already have people from interstate coming. Mark it in your diary.

Commercial stalls are also available. Where else will you have access to more than 1,000 herpers in the one place at the one time.

It's $10 for your first, $5 for your 2nd and $2 for each one there after. If you enter 2 or more you also get a free event T Shirt. Commercial Stalls are $100 for 10 square metres and seller tables (for breeders mainly) are $20 each.

Firstly, the categories are Snakes, Lizards and Others. The prizes will be $100 for the best and $50 for runner up in each category. The category winners & runners up will be judged by our sponsors or their representatives. The major prize of $500 is judged by the punters. The runner up will also receive $50. That totals $1,000 in prize money.

As for hygiene rules I would much prefer these to be explained by a reptile vet. Dr Johnson will be presenting all the rules to the Mac Herps meeting on Friday 16th of Feb. I reckon he knows a lot more about this subject then me but here goes my layman version.

All animals are to come in a white bag and will be inspected by Dr Johnson for mites. Mites are the easiest way to transfer any pathogens. Any cages that aren't new will be sprayed with TOD. Cages are not to be stacked. No animals are to be removed from their enclosures. Any person removing an animal will be asked to leave.

anyone wanting to inspect an animal for sale will go into a separate room with the owner. No one else. They inspect the animal and then wash with f10. The animal is replaced in the container and is then put back with the sellers animals only to be removed when the buyer is leaving.

Of course, as Dr Johnson said, you can't completely remove the risk of transfering pathogens. But you also can't do that in a vet waiting room. You could inadvertantly shake hands with a person who has a snake at home and do the same thing. What we have done here is provide the best environment we can whilst still providing a medium to educate the general public about our hobby.

If you feel you have more to offer we are more than willing to accept suggestions.
