winter cooling

Whats the recomended procedure for temps etc for winter for BHPs that are too young to breed?
Do you still cool them and hibernate them or do you just keep temps at the summer range and keep feeding them through.
All answers welcome, i'm learning as i go and appreciate the time ppl take to answer my questions.
Thanks

It's up to you, i'll be keeping mine warm and continuing to feed them.

Aussie pythons don't hibernate, if you cool them over Winter make sure you still heat them as normal during the day.

Do you give them a night time drop? if so what is your lowest point you will let temps drop to.

As long as they are inside it doesn't really matter what the temp drops to, just heat them during the day.

We hope to breed from our Murray Darling pair next season(they will be 3yrs old), so can someone please advise us on what we need to do over the winter cooling time? Really haven't done a lot of research on this as yet. Or do you think that 3yrs is still too young for breeding? Thanks in advance, Cheryl

rodentrancher,- mds will breed at 3yrs no worries, to cool give them hot days and cold nights for a couple of weeks before and during mating.

My coastals are kept inside. Is it ok to have heat on during the day (approx 10hrs) and non at night, all year round?

i would have about 4-5hrs of heat and 8-10hrs of light a day for cooling

Thanks True Blue. How soon should we start the hot days and cool nights? Sorry, we haven't done a lot of research into this yet. When do MD's go into the mating phase? November, December, January? Cheers Cheryl

I have had no dramas doing exactly that Julie-anne. If you don't plan on breeding though it can be a good idea to keep young heated year round and continue feeding though if they are well fed a winter cool shouldn't hurt as thats what naturally occurs. But during summer the days are longer so daylight [photoperiods] should be longer too. 12-14hrs reduced to around 8-10 over winter, try and replicate the natural light phases for each season. The trick is trying to get the night time temps to drop quickly when cooling for breeding as most cabinets retain heat too well. When you consider the day temp is close to double what you want the night temps to be and you want them to drop rapidly at night it can be tricky.

Thanks for that Choppy
My hatchies have a heat mat which is left on all the time (unless its very hot/middle of Summer weather) But my yearling's ceramic heater is on a timer which swithces off at night. I don't plan on breeding her this year (she's only 15mnths) i just wondered if having no heat at night was ok.
