Winter Cooling and Feeding

Do you have to cool your snakes over winter if they are not breeders ? Both mine are still small, maybe about yearling size. Or can I keep the heat mats temp as normal throught the winter, approx 30 - 31c for the childreni and about the same for the diamond x ?

The next question is should I stop feeding through winter if the temps are kept the same or should I just reduce the number of feeds.

I know it's early but I want to be prepared with the right knowledge. I live in the Nowra / Shoalhaven area, we get cold nights down to about 2c at lowest but so far not below zero.

Thanks guys and gals.

If you are not going to breed then no need to cool them down, they should eat as normal however some individuals will go off their food during winter regardless of temps.

My first snake, a male childreni, usually stops eating for about 6 - 9 months every year, no matter what I do (he even stopped for about 4 - 6 months in his first year). He refused his last feed.

As long as you give them about 5 - 6 hours of heat during the day and don't let the temperature drop too low overnight your snakes should be fine. Just check up on them every now and then for RI, etc. and make sure they always have fresh water.

Yeah I have heard... And I am not sure that there is any evidence to back it up.....

But for the snakes long term health... I have heard it is better for them to go through a cooling down period.....

Again I state... Only what I have heard.. And as far as I know not proven...
