I was thinking of worming my snakes, I usually take them to the vet, but I bought some reptile wormer, I was thinking of weighing the snake and injecting the right amount of wormer into a dead rat, what do you guys think about that?
Is it safe to inject it into the dead (obviously) rat? Was thinking about air bubbles etc!

Hi Fay,
No problem doing what you suggested, just make sure that you weigh them all correctly, and you will be fine.

yeslong as like neil said weight snakes i myself use a crop suringe which has a round ball end and you can push it doun dead rats throat when i worm a snake i try use a smaller food item than id ordinary feed animal idea being its digested faster so medication or wormers work better than if put in food item that is larger and takes longer to digest

When we do i just inject the dead rat (normal feed size) and just feed it to the snake as normal. In the space under the rib cage (going up from the bottom of the rib cage) which is known as the lung cavity is a good place to put the worming solution, but u can only put a little bit there then puncture the rat again and insert a bit more then go to another spot and puncture the rat again and insert a little bit more and so on.

The only problem with worming in this manner is that different wormers are metabolised at different sites in the body. If an oral wormer is designed to be absorbed in the very first part of the gastrointestinal tract, then it will be protected from metabolism by the bulk of the mouses body until much further down the snakes gut. Here it may not be metabolised at all or may be deactivated. If you must inject into a feed item use the smallest possible item e.g pinkie rat or mouse so that it will be digested rapidly. I am not a fan of routine worming simply because in most cases we are treating unneccesarily and presenting drugs to animals that they may not be needing. Repeated use of the limited drugs available to us also leads to parasite resistance and loss of that drug for future use. As a wormer I use mostly Moxidectin Plus available from Australian Pigeon Company in Melbourne (Knox Street Bird Clinic). It is single dose, small dose and tastless and is suitable at the bird dose for all reptiles. I would also suggest for those that are keen to look at my book "Under the Microscope" and learn how to faecal test your snakes before rushing in to routinely treat them. This book will show you step by step how to set it all up and then has colour plates to tell you what you are seeing.

This book (my third) has been out for a year or two.Book number four (reptiles) and five (foreign finches) are still in the pipeline. Available from ABK Publications 0755907777 or www.birdkeeper.com.au.
Forgot to mention, I do not use moxidectin in turtles (or ivermectin, avermectin, doramectin). They are acutely sensitive to this drug and can be overdosed easily.
