You're probably "technically" correct with this but no one I know has ever had a problem doing it. Plenty of people upgrade using python experience then get something like a Lacy. Maybe it's just ineptitude on behalf of the OEH or maybe it's actually in the rules. Either way it works for the keeper.

Can anyone direct me to any conditions on the R2 Licence based on prior species kept?
Edit: I guess it's on the application form as per the initial post.Last edited by Anthill; 23-May-12 at 03:18 PM.

Exactly right Dan.

As I wrote earlier it is most likely due to the fact that they don't check your records on their system for whatever class 2 types you are endorsed to keep. It's not technically correct but more so legally correct.A phone call to the department will clarify it for anyone that is unsure or curious as to how it really works.

Hey Anthill, they have changed the wording on the new form but here it is:
2. Have at least 2 years experience in the care and handling of the relevant species of animals (ie, reptiles, birds or amphibians) in a lower class of licence
3. For reptile applications, the reptile being sought must be from the same taxonomic group or family of reptiles that you have had care and handling experience previously (eg if you want to keep geckoes in the advanced reptile class, you must have kept geckoes from the basic class first)
Reference: http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/re...quirements.pdf
Point 2 & 3 are sort of connected - so you have to of kept the specie (e.g. reptile, bird etc.) for a min. of 2 years and have to have experience of the reptile group/family (e.g. pythons, geckos etc.) that you want to keep. That's what the old form said bluntly before they changed the wording, but they are more than happy to explain it to you on the phone if you call and ask about it.Last edited by SamNabz; 23-May-12 at 03:27 PM.

Ok thanks mate, seems like it's fairly clear then.

the wording seems fairly clear, but after hearing other people's experiences I'm a bit confused about alternatives. While i wait to hear back from the department, does anyone here work for them or are friendly with someone who works for them who can clear this whole thing up? even p.m. me if you don't want to talk about your work on this thread.

So i got a final answer from the department of wildlife! All our questions are answered:
"Once you have a class 2 licence you can keep what ever class 2 animals you like. However, when we make our initial assessment, we will be looking at the class 2 species you plan to keep and what experience you have had with that group/family of animals from class 1"1 Diamond Python (Heidi), 1 Darwin Carpet Python (Blaze), 3 Children's Pythons (Charlie, Eleanor & Boo Radley), 3 Black Soil Dragons (Icarus, Calypso & Rocket), 2 Central Netted Dragons (Triton & Sally), and 1 Corgidor (Bonnie).

Thanks for clearing that up. I've never bothered applying for an R2 in the past as I'm pretty content with my current collection.
Ill probably apply next year though when my current Licence expires. Have been thinking about adding some V. brevicauda.
