    Reptile Expo's in SA??

How come we dont have anything like this here in SA?

I have been looking around on the net and have seen that a couple of the other states hold them?

We have a bunch of decent places here, eg. Convention centre, adelaide showgrounds etc that could easily accomodate one, why are we missing out????????

could be a good place to buy/sell from private breeders etc instead of having ppl in their homes, get licences/information etc good promotion for all companies that sell anything to do with reptiles.

What the hell, this is so unfair? Were so neglected over here in SA

I don't think we have one but the pet expo that comes here in march has a reptile section which is pretty good but i don't think they sell animals just supplies

SA is tiny compared to the Eastern States remember.
We have 3 major reptile shops whereas the other states have several.
It would not be worth the time, money and effort yet to have reptile shows in SA, as turnout and turnover would be minor.

On the other hand the reptile scene is growing rapidly so in the near future it may very well be viable to have a reptile show in our awesome state.

I would love to see a reptile expo here. I'm over the regular type of pet expos, we need something different to get more interest. So many people here have no clue when it comes to reptiles and the varieties there are to choose from
Snakes are awesome creatures, even if they don't eat chocolate

To appeal to a bigger variety of people they would need to advertise everywhere which would cost someone a small fortune, for very minimal profit really.

Unless one of the local herp shops sponsored the event or something.

Sweet something to look forward too
Many of you won't know this, but Adelaide did host the second world congress meeting of Herpetology in the early 90's, and it was a big deal. Professional Herpetologists descended upon the city from around the world to attend the week long event.
The best thing was, in a very large hall, vivariums were set up displaying nearly every know species of Australian reptile and frog!!!! Or at least the organisers had tried very hard to attempt this goal. It was out of this world and if this event was such a success (hundreds of people, if not thousands, attended) we can certainly accomodate a reptile expo

Isn't the SA Herp Society in a position to be able to host such a thing, with sponsors, of course??????
Gavinator, thats good, but Renmark is a bit out of the way for most in the Adelaide area, a bit more of a central venue would be FAR better.
I remember several years ago, at the shwogrounds here in SA, there were snake handlers in an 'arena' made up of the ole galvanised iron. More of that sort of stuff would be good, IN OR NEAR Adelaide, to get a better attendance.

It would be fantastic to organise one here in S.A, i dont think people know how much planning goes in to these events.

    Hey all!

Yes, it would be fantastic to have an expo in our fair state, but after all the "discussion" over the Melbourne Expo, I don't think anyone will be taking this kind of thing on lightly.

Having said that, it's great that Matt's grabbed the bull by the horns, and it will probably take well up to March/April 2011 to get it happening - and yes, I'll be there (going up for the SAHG Christmas BBQ on the 8th - last time I went was 2004!), irrespective of where it's held! I've been to the Melbourne one for the last couple of years, had an absolute ball.

Will be checking this thread very closely for updates, thanks guys!

    Best,
    Carolyn
