Your snake will go a dull colour, and his eyes will turn milky before he sheds. Sometimes best not to handle him in this period as he can't see well and may be snappy (this isn't the case for my snake, but is for some). Also some people recommend not feeding during this period, again, it must depend on the snake because my mac's appetite doesn't change at all.

Make sure that as he comes up to the shed his cage is humid or he may have problems. Other than that, he can be left to his own devices. He also needs some furniture like a branch to rub up against to get the skin off.

After the shed, make sure there are no bits left (especially check eye caps and tip of the tail) as this can be dangerous to him. If he has old skin still stuck to him, give him a warm soak and try scraping it off, or put him in a warm damp (not wet) pillow case and let him crawl around until it comes off.

    Cheers

Also make sure he has a water dish big enough to soak in as they like to soak prior to shedding, this helps soften it up. After the eyes go milky, they will clear up again for a few days just prior to shedding. Don't forget they cannot see very well at best of times, during shedding they are even worse, so watch out untill you get to know your snake.
