Stupid Act!
Today I was shocked to learn of a Tasmanian demonstrator placing live tiger snakes around the necks of high school students, after the students had been told they are not altered, not milked and dangerously venomous....personally I don't care how people handle their own venomous snakes, its your life take whatever risk you like....but seriously, risking other peoples lives is down right stupid. If there was a bite it's not just this one individual who will suffer, the whole reptile community will suffer. Seriously, when will people learn.

It is difficult to believe that a demonstrator could be so irresponsible. I totally agree that no-one has the authority to put others lives at risk through such cavalier actions. In addition, you have to ask what sort of message is going out to the public about dangerously venomous snakes as a result?
The individual concerned should be dobbed into his/her licensing authority. They can then make the appropriate judgement of what should happen based on what conditions the licence is issued under.
If a demonstrator’s purpose is to educate the ignorant about snakes, then they should exemplify what they are teaching in the way they handle snakes. Venomous snakes, especially dangerously venomous snakes, should be left alone for he experts only. Attempts to relocate or kill a snake are likely to result in a bite to those not trained in the correct handling of wild snakes. The absolute last thing you want to put into people’s minds is that if they are gentle and confident, they can actually handle a deadly serpent without fear of being bitten. What they should be told is that there a quite a number of gravestones resulting from snake bites that could have engraved on them: “Oops, my mistake!”

How can this happen? I thought there were strict guidelines for demonstrations?

It is these kinds of stupid, irresponsible, stunts that may lead to ven keepers being further demonised and eventually banned.
If you want to freehandle do so at home but don't involve the public who are not fully aware of the risks and consequences.11:55 PM [Tuatara] Grizz.. is a bear, isnt that a gay term?? I thought he might be with jay or something

As a high school teacher (who keeps a licensed python at school) I am totally appalled. The demonstrator, the school and the supervising teacher are all liable for reckless actions endangering students. It doesn't matter that no one got hurt. The actions are unbearably stupid with a high and unacceptable risk. We have had great demonstrators come to our school and allow students to handle pythons and lizards under careful supervision. I would hate for people to think that those wonderful demonstrators are in any way similar to that moronic individual.

It is at a school, as a demonstrator, registered teacher and parent, I too am appalled.....one of my other concerns in the dropping of multiple snakes around children's necks, and the use of multiple children holding multiple snakes.....there is a limited amount of control already, then add multiple students and animals the risk is insane, the liability does not stop with the demonstrator and my simple question is, would a teacher allow this same activity with dogs...Multiple dogs running unrestrained around a group.
Regardless of the competency of the handler, how well trained or conditioned the animals are you should never put 100% trust in an animal or another person around animals.....
