Light & Heating
I have myself a Bredli in a 5ft unit!
Now the questions I have are around night heating and also the right choice of lights. It's the typical 4 light sockets with a thermo down the cool end.
Have been told just to run red party lights 24/7 to just keep the heat at 28 in the hot end! I however have made the choice to just use the red infared lights and cut that down to 3 X 40watt lights! Seems to keep the heat gradient better from hot to cold end.
My question is should I be leaving this on 24/7 through the night? The snake seems happy and has no problems =S keep in mind I'm in Melbourne and it's cold at night. Should I be looking at maybe running a heat rock or night globes at night? As I was under the idea that the snake can not see infared!

That's how the breeder in Melbourne does it (for his 1500+ snakes)

I don't have Bredli (on my wish list) but 28C on basking side seems low?!

Not sure on the science of what colour spectrum snakes can or cannot see but the red light is not infrared it is just red light waves from the colour spectrum. I usually prefer the purple night lights on a thermostat because they put out less light and simulates night time better and use a small wattage basking light on a timer to simulate the daytime hours. As for exact wattage that depends on your size enclosure and the age of the snake will determine the temperatures. My location is Brisbane so it is a bit warmer up here but with a thermostat I can keep a pretty good temperature. I am also assuming your Bredli isn't a hatchie if it is in a 5 foot enclosure.

28 was just what it was showing at the time! It's norm between 28 and 32!

Never use a heat rock

Ok!
So today I worked it all out! As the room is being used for a night shift worker to sleep in during daylight hrs I needed to work something out for this problem to.
Got my sparky to add a switch to the 4th light socket as it's pretty much not needed the unit runs fine with 3 x 60watt infareds! Three reading of 32 - 26 - 23 along the unit can drop the low end a little lower if I chuck 1x60 and 2x40watt globes in.
Now the extra switch is so I can run the extra daylight globe for the daylight hrs so the snake is not to confused about day and night! With the night shift worker shutting off lights around 12pm.
