any opinions on these lumps?

Hi all,

Over the past 8 weeks one of my Port Macs has sloughed 3 times. He has no mites and seems responsive and fairly alert, although not as active as usual. The problem is he has two small lumps about 6 inches up from his cloaca, on either side of his body (see pics).

I noticed them when I had him out while cleaning his enclosure. He sloughed just last night and left a nice mess to clean! So I guess he isn't constipated! When I took him outside he was using his tail (as usual) to grip but when i had him on the ground his tail (from the cloaca to the tip) was fairly unresponsive when touched and could be placed in any position (as seen in the pic) where he would leave it until you moved it again.

He is in good condition and has been eating fine, hasn't lost any weight and his temps are with normal range. A few weeks ago he spent a number of days soaking in his bowl but I thought nothing of it because they sometimes like to do that. All my enclosures were treated with 2 courses of TOD (2 weeks apart) about a month ago and other than that there has been no other chemicals in the enclosures besides F10, used when cleaning.

Any thoughts as to what the lumps could be? I am thinking maybe parasitic like worms or something? I will keep a close eye on it and if it gets worse I will have him looked at by a vet. Our vet here isn't too clued up on reptiles so he may not be able to help much.

Thanks
Shane

To be honest, it looks like a tumor to me that is pressing out on both sides.

I know nothing about these things to be honest but could it be the substrate your using?

Could be Magpie, thanks. Not sure if a tumor would only press out both sides or the belly as well? Like one big lump instead of two? The belly seems fine where the lumps are.

I use newspaper for substrate, by the way.

Edit: Also, the lumps are soft to touch and the snake doesn't react to them being touched.

You may find its nothing serious but it might be uncomfortable rather than painful which is why he will keep his tail in one position...I really am not gonna be of much help im sorry

My guess would also be a tumor. I'd say a trip to a good herp vet is in order mate.

Thanks guys. I'll keep a close eye on it and book an appointment in the near future with a decent herp vet.

Cheers

I am guessing that most herp vets would start by feeling all the way down the snakes body to see if they feel anything abnormal. What do these lumps feel like?

Basically when you run your finger from front to back the lump disappears, no actual hardness at all. If you close your eyes and do it you wouldn't know there is a lump there. When the fingers pass over it, the lump appears again.

That does not sound like a tumor. More like a fluid filled sack which could be caused by a parasite or something like that

Yeah i was thinking perhaps a cyst as well if it is soft to touch I've seen a wild adult carpet with something similar but further up its body and was able ot have it removed.

Good luck with it Shane let us know how he goes.

He hasn't had any falls or accidents since I have had him. No dangers in the enclosure. I did have a grape vine in there for a week until I heard borers in the wood one day so I promptly removed it.

I've seen lumps identical to this (and in the same part of the body) in wild diamonds. I've even had my own diamonds develop these lumps over the years. I've never done anything about them and over time they've disappeared by themselves.
