Beardie Behaviour

Hi there, i'm a first time beardie owner and have quick question which i hope isn't too stupid.

Is there any reason why beardies keep their eyes shut (other than sleeping of course) He started with one eye about a week ago keeping it shut like there was some grit in there or something but in the last day or two is now keeping both eyes shut - but he's awake, he'll open them periodically to see what's happening ie when i pick him up or give him food but closes them again. He's eyes seem perfectly normal, no irritation, no swelling - he's still very active and eating normally. I just find it strange??

i had the same problem just a few days ago. Mine wouldnt open his eyes alot either, i tthen realised its because he was a little freaked out in his 4ft tank, and was justing getting used to it. He know runs around very brightly, eats and does everything normally. If he is justing setting in, give him some time. My UVB is an exo-terra 10.0. What UVB are you using, as Kirby asked?
Cheers

within about 4inches, i know what you have to do kirby, within 6 inches is around the limit. I took all this into consideration when constructing the enclosure

Well i was wondering wether this might have something to do with the new tube as i have just changed it, the other one broke. It's still a repti-glo but i think it's a different wattage? to what i had before as the shop didn't have the same as i was using. I think it's an 8.0 or higher? It's a tube in a 3ft tank. He's been in there since i got him in June so it's not a settling in problem. He can get to about 4-6 inches of it. He goes out in the sunshine of an afternoon for about 1/2hr

If you are using a Repti-Glo (Exo Terra) 10.0 fluro tube, I believe the recommended distance is 10 inches. If the tube is too close to your beardie, he/she will suffer eye problems. I suggest you move the tube a bit further away.

Interesting, thanks Miss.B. Mine is conststantly around 8-10 inches from the UV, though closest would be 4-5 inches. Woould this be ok?

the tube is fine, and it wont 'will' happen, it 'may'

i'd say 8 inches.

if the tank is bright enough, the bulb should not have effects on the eyes. i run a reptisun 10.0 tube, at 8 inches from a platform were he sits almost all day. and another flourescent, and a bright white basking bulb. the brighter the better.

are his eyes clear, are they ***** or dirty? whats your substrate, is it dusty?

His eyes are clear, no irritation that i can note, no swelling no gunk in them. He first did it when i gave him a bit of a soak when he was shedding and thought he just got some water in his eye. it was shut for a couple of days then he opened it and all was fine, but 2 days ago noticed he was keeping both eyes shut? Would it have anything to do with shedding? When his eyes are closed the bottom lid is slightly purpley in colour but it's always been like this. He'd be over 12mnths now too? the substrate is just newspaper at the moment, i've bought that crushed walnut but have since read that it's no good?
