Right, i'm a bit nervous of putting on another post but i want some advice so here goes................................
I have my little beardie, and all he will eat is crickets or earthworms. I can't get him to eat any vegies, i've tried grated carrot, grated apple, bok choy, broccolli, strawberries, and even banana. Anyone know any tricks on how to get a beardie to eat his vegies? He eats daily, about 5-10 crickets and a couple of earthworms. Is it important for a beardie to eat their greens?
Thanks be nice |

well you could try putting a cricket in frront of his face and when he goes to eat that you could slip a bit of vegetable in his mouth instead and once it is in his mouth he should keep on eating it

Hey Koubee
When beardies are young and growing, insects make up about 90% of their diet. When they're sub adults/adulst though, that starts to shift and they begin to eat more greens.
Just keep offering the veggies to him and eventually, he'll begin to eat them. It's might just take him a while. Don't give him broccolli though - it binds their calcium so it's no good for them.
Good luck

oh ok i'll keep leaving fresh greens and fruit for him, what other greens and fruit is good for a beardie.
Is it ok to feed him mealworms as a treat?

We give ours vegies, juvie beardie pellets (you know the ones that you put water on). When they are just starting out, we give it to them every couple of days.....they may not start eating it for ages but eventually do, they just need to get used to it.You don't give them heaps as in the beginning heaps will get wasted. They become familliar with it and just start eating it......eventually! You just have to be patient!
Do not feed mealworms to any dragon until they are adults! I could go into a speel about if the mealworm has just shed it is ok etc etc but it is best avoided 'til they are adults JMO!

Thanks Fay, The juv beardie pellets, are they the multi coloured ones? Tried him with pellets but won't even touch them.
Can he get to reliant on me if he is being hand fed daily. Tried to trick him by offering him a cricket and quickly changing it for bok choy but he too clever and spat it out. Will just keep trying.

Just put them in a little dish in his enclosure every couple of days and just be patient! Ours all eat the coloured pellets, won't touch the ones in the jar that are just brown. Garth bought a bag of bearded dragon food in a package, I think it was made be exoterra just to see if they like it and they all seem to be eating that.
We don''t hand feed any of our dragons so I really don't know how to go about that!

I'm with you Fay, hold off on mealies until the beardies are older. It's just not worth the risk IMO
Try this website koubee - had a HUGE list of what hot and what's not for your beardie in the way of fruit and veg www.beautifuldragons.com
Good luck

Big thanks guys, really appreciate it. I'll keep at him, hopefully i'll be getting him a little friend soon, so that might stop him being a fussy little so and so. I thought it might make him a bit more competative when it comes to food and hopefully not so fussy. And i'm sure he'd love another little beardie to hang out with.
Once again thanks.

I had the same trouble with my beadie, anything that wasn't alive, was not an option for him, but with putting in mixed cut up vegies and fruit every day he eventually started to have a go, also we feed him Repti-Cal Juvie pellets mixed with water and juice and he cant get enough ( of the green ones, wont really touch the others lol). so (IMO) with time and some nice smells ( like the juice) im sure your beadie will be eating those vegies. Good luck |

Bek, are you sure about the broccoli thing?
It is the vegie that my beardies love the most, and they look very healthy.

I have / and bred heaps of vitties and have never known of one not to eat veggies. They dont generally eat heaps of them as young dragons, but tend to nibble at them from time to time. Try clover and dandelions (leaves and flowers), try spinning the flower in front of the dragons nose from time to time. But if he's eating bugs well I would not worry and just offer him greens one or twice a week and see if he eats them as he might start to when the weather heats up as they get a bit fussy in the cooler months. As adults my vitties would be eating 50/50 veg / bugs & mice but juvies 20 / 80 veg & bugs. Mine won't touch pellets at all, even the one that eats dog food.
