bit o help here pls

Hey ,
our little bearded dragon has been hiding all day every day, in the cold part of his enclosure. He won't come out for heat or to eat and just wants to sleep all day. He is definatly not getting uv and i wonder if he is alright. He is in a 1200 long enclosure and the temp at the basking site is approx 35 to 40. But he hides away in the cold. We actually get him out and put him under the heat and drip water on his snout so he has a drink and he hangs out under the heat for a while but then goes and hides again. I thought he was suffering RI as he was opening his mouth the other day when i put him under the heat lamp, and was chewing really slow when he ate, and also seemed to have swollen glands in his throat. But if this is the case wouldn't he get under the heat to heal himself?

All thoughts and advice welcome.
Thanks

Try putting a hide in the hot end and taking the one away from the cold.

im not real sure but you have to rememebr that sick aniamls liek to hid away and not come out because they are depressed and feel vulnerable. i cna jsut say keep him warm and hydrated. if you are really worried you could put him in a smaller enclourse whihc is easier to maintain a good heat and more controlable.

cheers

yeah thats pretty cold his metabolism has probably started to drop if he sn't big neough to last the winter then i'd suggest a smaller enclosure keep the heat up keep him hydrated and then get him eating if he stays in that cold area to much he jsut wont want to eat or some out to bask. and at a colder temp there is a higher chance of gettign a respiratory infection.

I wouldn't be too worried, unless you have seen reasons to be. The cool end in my beardies tank, when I had them, used to get as cold as that and only around 27 in the hot end. They would curl up in the cold end for a couple of months till they were ready to come out of brumation. If you have serious concerns about the animals health then I would have it vet checked to be sure. If it does have an RI, then I would move it to a more suitable habitat and keep him warm, but I would seek veterinary advice first.

Cheers
Daz

So they can just stop eating for a fewmonths and not need uv or food?

Dont worry Cement, in my experience this time of year is their cool down time, they can go without food or UV for a little while at least. Think if they were out in the wild, they would be buried whilst it is winter and then when the days warm up, out they come.

He will be fine. Dont keep disturbing him or that will stress him out ok. just leave him be and when he has had enough of a rest and the ambient temperature in the tank warms up, he will be back and extremely hungry. He needs this rest if he is a boy, to give him viable sperm, so that he will be able to produce little beardies in the spring, with the help of a girlfriend of course

Ahh ok. I disturbed him tonight and put him under the heat, and he came to and chased some crickets and ate them. He had a little bask and then buried himself back down the cold end. he seemed quite ok, maybe the "swelling" around his throat is just fat.
Anyways thanks crew.
