i agree with the others ,a well fed python is a happy python.a mate of mine power feeds his water pythons to calm them down in their early years.i think they are too fat to bother striking.he then slims them down once they start behaving.it works but i dont necessarily agree with it.

You will also need to provide a heat spot in the morning so that will help
him diggest his food, especially now that you WILL increase his food intake.
Cooling will also do him a world of good and prelong his life.
Cooling is not feeding him during the winter months, weather i'm breeding or not.
I never provide night time heating for my diamonds,[ unless the female is gravid ] so that when the cooler weather approaches
they natural go off their food and start up again in october'ish.
Doing all the above, should calm your boy down a fair bit, but only time will tell.
See if you can find a local breeder for your rats, as pet shops can be quite dear at times.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Aleks.
P.S - just had a thought, he might need a lady snakey.............

Everyone’s been very helpful (well, except for a few stroppy posts, but I guess that’s my lot this week…perhaps a couple rats would fix it?) There’s no shop that sells frozen rats in Wollongong city. If Warrawong does, they’re not consistent because we’ve been there twice in the past year with no luck. I’ll definitely check out the store in Albion park (thanks Serpentongue). We’re in the process of moving, so If anyone has any suggestions for places to get frozen rats in Canberra, I’m all ears! In my defense, our snake is not starving. I agree he’s underfed and hopefully a fuller belly will stop him acting out so much. But, all our reading says that diamonds are notoriously overfed in captivity, as this subspecies eats a lot less than the other carpet pythons. “keep ‘em’ a bit hungry” was the advice we got from the breeder and my herp scientist friends (I’m a biologist, but of the marine variety). There’s also at least one peer-reviewed paper on diamonds that have shown how much they eat in the wild (if I can find it soon, I’ll post it). Our snake definitely eats more than these guys. Having said that, captivity is different than the wild so I really do appreciate all the expertise here! |

Yeah, I thought about the lady snakey thing too Mungus. He started moving all around his tank a few months ago, even after he'd just been fed, seemingly looking for something. Don't know if it's the warmer temps or breeding season, or being underfed or all three! Maybe we do have a boy...?

rats have more nutrients then mice - pure and simple.

Serpenttongue... bought him from a breeder in Dapto several years ago. Lost the contact details which is a pity since this guy had gobs of herps
Also, our diamond is 'only' 5 feet. sorry for the initial typo- I think it made the situation seem even worse!
And thanks so much Dickeyknee... will pm you in a tic

Just a random thought before I log out of here for the evening... apparently diamonds' natural food are mostly lizards, small rodents, and birds?
Has anyone ever tried to feed their snake lizards or any other creative foods in captivity?

You are not allowed to feed lizards to any snake. They are protected as well.
