The "modern" way of breeding crickets is now not to use peat moss as a substrate. Buy your crickets and just leave them in the tub with no substrate. Still use a wet sponge for water and provide hiding places with the discarded egg cartons from yoru previous cricket purchases.
But now what you do is put the peat moss intot he chinese container. Fill it right up to the brim. Then cut the middle out of your lid and replace that with fly screen. Place the lid on the container that is full of peat moss.
The idea is that the crickets lay theiir eggs in the peat moss. The fly screen stops them digging it up but their ovipositor can still get in the gaps to lay the eggs.
After a week take out the chinese container and leave it in a new cricket tub. You can give your adult crickets another tub to lay their next 5,000 eggs or you can feed them off to your dragons and buy another set of adults and keep going.
Remember that crickets like heat. You should be aiming to keep them at around 30 degrees. It will let them grow quicker and keep them at about an 8 week life cycle.
Feed them dried dog food, carrots, lettuce etc.
Good luck!!

is it true that small or medium crickets are the way to go? and that large crickets are too old to breed?

I used fine sand in the containers when I was growing them and they didn't seem to dig it up.
Otherwise the same as above.
If you buy any you may want try these guys: http://frogs.org.au/arcade/index.php...9045d16054cc30
