Yep you can take it to the vet or an animal hospital.

But you're not allowed to take it home and care for it, Unless you have a special licence I believe.. but I'm sure that if you found it injured on the side of the road at night time, when there wouldn't be any vets etc open. You could keep it over night and then take it to the vets the next day.

In queensland you're allowed an INJURED animal for up to 3 days MAX but during that time you must be seen as attempting to take that animal to an approved wildlife shelter, a vet or have a wildlife representative (from the EPA or such forgetting clinical terms) pick the animal up from you.

I was suprised at the 3 day thing - but I phoned EPA and asked them, and they were adamant you're allowed the reptile for up to three days...

But if it is injured, you MUST get it to the vet straight away!

Yes, in all instances you're breaking the law by removing wildlife - Just touching a healthy wild snake apparently carries severe penalties - so I was told on a recent wildlife trip along the Daintree.

You can also apply for a damage mitigation permit which allows you to care for sick and injured wildlife. Contact Qld NPWS and your local wildlife care group if this is an interest for you as there are lots of regulations and stuff to follow.

you can get a damage mit permit to keep a wild non returnable to the wild animal..

you may not keep the animal with any other animal,,you cant breed or sell the animal..

you will need written confomation from a vet that animal will live COMFORTABLY in captivity(eg no pain)but will not survive in the wild(eg blind bearded dragon)
you will need tp contact your local epa for more details

Are you sure about this??? We have some of the strictest laws in aus, and i have been told from a wildlife carer that you must have a wildlife rehabilitator license (whatever the correct license is)...

I thought it was illegal to take keep an animal if it cant be later released, by law it should be euthanaised(im fairly sure this is the case but they often give differant stories), although technically you are allowed to keep them as you say but only if it is initially thought to be able to be released. I once thought of abusing this loophole to be able to keep an orphaned possum(as they generally cant be safely released).
If what you are saying is true does that mean i can keep an orphaned possum as a pet if i get the permit?

If the snake is injured enough to be taken from the wild, its injured enough that it will need to be taken to a vet. Unless of course your a qualified vet and have access to all the neccessary equipment.

If raised correctly it can be released so that theory is not valid. You don't want one as a pet anyway unless you don't enjoy sleeping
