Carbaryl???...poisonous to herps???

Does anyone have any information as to whether this insecticide has adverse effects on reptiles?.... i've tried to find out on the net with little luck.
The dept of primary industries has informed me they will be at my place a 7am tomorrow, to spray a rather large mango tree for leaf hoppers...(so i was informed late this afternoon  )
It worries me somewhat as i have an outside enclosure with hollows etc containing my scalaris colony underneath the tree....They seem to think it shouldn't be a problem; however they cant give a straight answer as to whether it has adverse effects on reptiles or not. It's a program to control Leaf hoppers; a recent pest incursion in mango crops up this way.....they are going around the local area doing the trees with large misters etc....
Bit of a joke really, as i don't see them going along the river treating all the big wild trees  ...If it doesn't kill reptiles; what about the effect it my have on breeding etc? Any information would be very appreciated....it's a worry....
I guess i'll have to strip the enclosure of hollows with lizards and tarp up before they turn up....
Cheers all for any advice regarding this chemical.

This site is very informative: http://extoxnet.orst.edu/pips/carbaryl.htm

Seems it is virtually non-toxic to birds, so i would say reptiles should be ok. I would be taking the same precautions you've mentioned anyway, just to be on the safe side.

Better safe than sorry mate
JMO.

If not sure of the consequences just treat it as dangerous ^__^

Had a bit of a google myself, it does seem to cause reproductive depression at the least.

Hi Indicus,
I showed Garth this thread......he said that it is one of the safest of all inseticides. Tomato dust and vegetable dust is carbaryl.
He has used it extensivelly with birds and rodents with no ill effects whatsoever! He has never used it with reptiles....but could not imagine it harming them in any way.

If they're going to use it on your property they should be obliged to at least provide you with product information from the manufacturer if you request it - it's no good relying on the operator who's applying it to tell you what it may or may not do. All poisons (and regardless of how "safe" they may be) have to be supplied with product safety information. I would say you are willing to allow them to do it on condition that they provide documented answers to your (quite reasonable) questions. In any event it is inappropriate for them to advise you of the intention at such short notice, and on a Friday when you have little opportunity to obtain the info you need before they enter your property to spray. There is the chance that even if they're not affected dirctly by the spraying, they may eat other insects which have been poisoned along with the leaf hoppers, and so could ingest quite a bit of the poison.

Jamie is absolutely right, they must provide you with the MSDS for Cabaryl, which they must have a copy of with them if they are going to spray. If the conditions are not perfect for spraying eg, it's windy or wet then you are completely within your rights to ask them not to spray

Thanks kindly Jamie and Kryo for your replies...
The information they supplied was rather poor....was more to do with the threat the bug posed to crops, rather then a break down of what the chemicals active ingredients were.....nothing about the chemical was provided from the manufacturer what so ever....i'll just take what precautions i can.
To true Fay

Not sure what state your in Indicus but NSW EPA website has a section on pesticides so it might be worth having a look. There's a few fact sheets etc, not sure if it lists Carbaryl though

 Typical, i was up and had the cage stripped at day break....they didnt turn up.
I guess it gives me more time now to find more about the product....which is good.
