It depends on the coastal you have and it's temperment. I've had my coastals pair for over 10 years now and my big male 9ft + is a big pussy cat. I've only be tagged twice by him at that size and both times where my fault. ie not washing hands after cleaning out the rats and BANG! food response, good fun everyone should try it

Pick your snake for temperment, treat it well and know it's habits and you will know what it's about to do before it does. I believe they make great starter Herps though others might recommend children's, it all depends on the size your wanting as an adult.

They may be a bit of a handful, requiring a 2nd person to help hold larger specimens but they are reasonably docile as adults. Younger specimens may remain flighty but even then they're usually reluctant to give a good bite.

I think coastals make an excellent first python.

I'm not big on cage height. My adult coastals are in enclosures with dimensions 1.4m long, 65cm wide and 50cm high.

I think you may want to go higher in height, though. Many people have 1m as their enclosure height.

over 10yo this year and about 8.5-9ft. About as thick as you forearm. Absolute champ of a snake and likes his lady's too

I started with coastals but favour stimmies and Aspidites now.
You've got to start somewhere and coastals are a good starter snake but down the track will grow large and you'll need to change cage size as it grows.

Coastal Carpets (not Coastal Taipans ) are a fantastic first snake The first one that I ever bought just "for me" is a coastal, but in reality I walked into herp keeping with a whole heap of different animals all at once courtesy of my partner Kris. This is my baby, Jezebel.

What do you all think of keeping a coastal in a 2ft x 3ft x 6ft high (ie. like a large upright cupboard) enclosure?
