Dead Baby Geckos & Pythons

Hi All,.

The last few weeks I have not had much luck.

None of my Asper eggs are ever any good,.
Only 1 that was due to hatch around 2 weeks ago was still ok,. but as it was over due and the egg was starting to look as though it was no good,.. I decided to nick the egg open only to find a dead fully formed Asper,.. very dissapointing!

Exact same thing happened to 1 of my Levis,. 1 hatched last week the other didnt, so decided to nick it open aswel, only to find a dead fully formed baby Levis.

Our Coastal laid approx 30 eggs this year, but only about 13 hatched, (most of them have come out lined), we nicked all the other eggs, but no others have come out and Im pretty sure the rest are dead.

We have hatched many Macs, Coastals & Levis out of this incubator, so I dont think its that,..

I have heard of a few other storys where people have recently lost alot of their hatchlings,. anyone know why this could be happening?

Kelly

You will always get a few herps dieing full term in the egg, though sounds like you had more than a few, how many levis?? as these are normally pretty tough, I might get one die in the egg for every 20 that hatch, and they are usually deformed. There could be many reasons, ie too much moisture, incorrect inc. temps, low calcium levels in mother due to illness, poor diet or incorrect enclosure temps. It is a really common problem, esp with some species.

Sorry to hear that disappointing story Kelly. You really aren't having a good time, especially with those asper... So far this season I've only had 1 full term death with levis. Sorry again to hear it.

Very sad to be losing so many little guys, especially so late in development.

What temps are you incubating at? 75 isn't really too long for asper, one lot of mine are coming up to that now- what was the egg looking like when you slit it, was it starting to 'deflate'???

I really hope you have more luck with the rest of your eggs!

So sorry to hear your losses Gecko. Good luck with the rest of them.

What is your normal incubation time for Asper eggs Dr Nick?

This is my first year breeding asper, but from what I have heard 75+ days is not unusual- depending on your incubating temps. Someone with more asper experience than me could answer definitively- incubation times can also be a fair bit shorter as well...

whats your mixture ratio for the incubation medium to water?..Could be dieing in osmosis? They expell the excess moisture from the egg, this is seen as small beads of water on the egg a few hours before hatching. If your moisture content is too high the water is reabsorbed just as quick as it is expelled from the egg and the fully formed, full term gecko in the egg drowns. This is just one thing that can cause these problems.

Sorry to hear about your loss i have found incubation temperature to be critical and have incubated snakes at lower temps to see if the theory of lined snakes is possible through low incubation temp and have found that i had a larger number of linned/striped hatchlings on two occasions out of two trials. I also had larger numbers of full term death. I use very accurate temp controllers on backup power supplies which can hold .1 deg c either side of the set point i have since had 100% hatch rate and no neonate deaths from the same breeding stock. I found that some temp controls do not stand up to there rated deviation on setpoint ie + or- 1 deg c. this is based on my experience and maybe worth having your temp control calibrated.
The other thing i do religusly is to air out my egg bogs once per week to allow no build of heavy gases. hope this helps.
