Dead jungle

Hi everyone,
just got a callm from my local pet shop as 1 of their 6 month old jungles has just died (no im not a vet). Last weekend she was moved to another viv (it was cooler than her normal viv 22oC ) she was fed 2 days later so tuesday (2 velvets) and seemed fine. on friday she regurged both velvets so checked temp and found the thermostat wasnt doing its job (was set to 28 but was switching off at 22) fixed problem and got the temp to 28, she stayed on the heat mat friday and saturday but was dead this morning. they are housed on crushed walnut shell ( which i personally don't like ).

Has anyone got any ideas Impaction, to cold?
ps no chemicals are used anywhere near them and they also have UV fluros over the vivs
which is now law in SA all pythons must have access to UV light.

Cheers Dennis

I keep my jungles at about 34 in the hot end. 28 is to cold, so is most probably the reason that it regurgitated its food, or the food could have had chemicals on it. Or it could have just been a sick snake to begin with, thats why it was sold to a pet store.

Did they do an autopsy on the poor little one? Crushed walnut shell sounds like a dumb idea and the temps are too cold. Any sign of a respiratory infection? was she fed on the walnut shell?

Autopsy should definitely be done.

Sounds like it may have had trouble digesting its meal if the temps were 22....

If the hot end of the enclosure was 22, i'd hate to think what the cool end was at. Was the thermostat probe at the hot end, cold end or in the middle somewhere?

The thermostat probe was under the heat mat and set at 28. Which is pretty much what i have always kept my top end carpets at. with a night time drop to 22. The only pythons ( i'm not allowed to keep elapids (i want Death Adders) as i have a 5yr old Bindi Irwin) i give basking temps higher are my womas and blackheads. Also going to autopsy her tomorrow to see if there's anything stuck and will do bacteria cultures.

Most pythons have a preferred body temperature of around 30 degrees, when they have food in their gut they prefer even higher. I suggest you have a complete rethink about the temperatures you're offering your pythons.

The rats were probably rotting inside her gut due to the cold temps, that's why she regurgitated them but by then (it would seem) it was too late; the damage had already been done.

Sorry Mr Bredli but i live in Adelaide in a dog box, my thermostats are set at 28 but during late spring, summer and early august they can sit at 30-34 so 28 isnt a low temp. Also my oldest is 15 and i have never had any trouble with her whatsoever or any of my other reptiles. the only trouble with temperature that i have is trying to keep my incubator below 32 in breeding season.

The regurge would have been a direct result of too low a night time temp. Hatchlings appear to be a lot less tolerant of this than adults. Its the most likely cause of death.

How long has this been the case and do you have a link to wherever the law is stated, please? Not that I don't believe you, I just haven't heard of it before now.

To ozExcaliber,
the web link is ;http://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/ind...=searchResults
Pdf file 1 NP&W REGULATIONS 2001. Page 8 section 18.1.fa.
Have talked to Fauna Permits unit and was told that you can be fined (but not likely) for not providing pythons with UV lighting.
