even more beardie stuff

sorry for another post about beardies

1. What age are they when i dont have to seperate them anymore?
2. when i take the beardeds out to the feeding tank, should i take them for a 10 minute feeding seperatley? or all together? just worried that one might get overfed and one might get underfed. what do you do?

3. for the dog owners- do you lizards ever get anywhere near to your dogs? do the dogs bark & frighten them? my beardies will probably be inside a 'shack'; but just incase my dog gets in (ill do my best to keep her out)im wondering what your dogs do.

4. how much do you handle your bearded dragons in a week?

i just want to learn as much as i can about bearded dragons before i keep them.

Thanks
Riley

5. Do i have to keep the male and the female seperate? I was gonna have one big tank for the beardies and then small tubs for the hatchie beardies. Will i have to have a divider in the big tank so the male & female are seperated?

thanks again

1. I believe that beardies will either get along or not. Age is no real indicator about their tolerance towards each other.
2. Depends on how many you have. Two or three should be fine all dropped into the tank. You still need to keep an eye on them to see who eats, and how much. If you can hand feed them then do it individually in their own tank. That's what I do.
3. A dog will most likely kill it on sight. Not sure about whether it scares the lizards. If they can run and hide then they might be fine, but if the dog starts scratching away trying to get to them, then you'll be introducing a massive amount of stress to the lizards. Then again it depends on te size of your dragons and dog. If it's a full grown adult, up against a chihuahua, then there might not be a problem.
4. Mine are still young, but I take them out of the tank once a day, just to give them a check over and see how they are going. If you want them as companions, then handle as much as possible (within reason - minimise stress...). Lack of contact will make them less tolerant to humans i.e. more flighty.
5. Depends if you want them to breed or not. Are you 100% sure you have a M/F pair? You may get complications in breeding periods and have to separate.

I believe its gender & size, not age
I only feed veg ,pinkies& mealworm in any habitat......i use a feeding tank with live feed(vasalining 3 inches at the top prevents escapees)
Feeding dragons of equal size in a feed tank promotes eating as they are competative & feed better & disables dominent personalities... you dont put 2 males in a feed tank together.
As for time i have always fed by demand..you will have some that will grow quicker & eat well
then you'll have some that need to take their time..& grow slower....
if you only give them a set time rather than eat till they are full you will deprive & lessen your chances of getting maximum quality out of any animal....if they stop eating (mine look up at me or go to jump out of feedtank when finished)..then take them out .
As for tanking them together...i do ,you get a longer life span out of your bearded dragons if you do...i know a couple who has a large avairy..1 of their males is 11 & still breeding & a 16 yr old fem had a hatch last season!...you do need the right ratio male to female though
I have 2 dogs ..1 is afraid of the cat! & reptiles.......the other has killed a bluey that i didnt know was out the back!.........its not worth the risk
Would you trust a grizzly bear with your dog!

Q6: At what age are they old enough to be able to determine the sex of the beardie?

thanks again

Hello

Hello,

Well, usually hatchlings are very difficult to sex. Normally at a few months, an experienced eye can pick it up, but not always. Something you think you have a female, & then later on, nope, it's a male.
So, some are harder to sex than others just due to the development of each dragon.
Personally, I wouldn't house 2 males together, or a male & a female together. The 2 males fight too much, & the male overbreeds your female.
If you are not setup financially to breed because the hatchlings will eat you out of house & home, then, I don't recommend breeding right now.
You can house 2 females successfully though, most of the times.
