If you don't want something that is going to grow 6-10 feet long, then go the children's variety. If adult size is not a problem, then from my experience, I'd say go for a Bredli. We have a few different species now, and my favorites are the Bredlies and the BHP. They are so placid and gentle, with curious natures.
But I have to concur with Inkslinger... don't go for the hatchies. If you aim for a snake that is between 6-12 months, you don't have to worry about feeding, shedding, handling. This is already done for you, and the snake has an established pattern so to speak. I've had the hatchie with feeding problems, and the hatchie with handling problems. It's not fun, too much worry and I don't like being bitten!
You want your first snake to be fun and enjoyable. Not a daunting task for the first few months of owning it. I'd say for the species.. entirely up to the person buying it, but I'd have to advise to go for the older snake, not a hatchie.

After loads of research and asking every herp expert I can corner, we decided on a Stimo (Broome locality becauser they are so beautiful, and the Wheatbelt ones were too pricey...)
After lots of discussion, we decided that a carpet might be a bit too much of a responsibility as a first snake - they are a size up from the antaresias which, when you aren't experienced at handling snakes, really does count!
Antaresias are also reasonably priced and will fit comfortably in the 3x2x2 enclosure.
I would LOVE a Diamond down the track, but by all accounts are a fair bit harder to look after - they seem to need quite specific care and are prone to health problems in captivity.
So this is just my (very) amateur opinion but I suppose I am approaching it from the perspective of someone who is a true beginner - facing all the difficulties and decisions myself!

Still very much interested in a BHP as a first snake and definately not a hatching, preferably a yearling with a good feeding/temperament history. I havent found a care sheet but if someone could pm me or send me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated...oh and enclosure setup etc. My first reptile was a beardie and has been awesome so far. I am very particular about any animal I own.
Many thanks....

| | | | im looking at getting a snake soon. i was thinking the opposite of the norm. i want a snake thats going to get big.
the only problem is i live in WA. and there is a limited number of available breeds (full list i dont know) and i would love a carpet python over a stimsons. but at the petstores they run for around 1000 while stimsons closer to 300.
what should i do. do private breeders sell them for more reasonable prices.? or should i just get a stimsons. |

He ate really well and frequently when I first got him, but now he's slowed down a bit and I haven't quite figured out the "new" time in between feedings...but we'll get there soon enough...I think he was just having a growth spurt... |
