Faulty thermostat> What can I do short term?

Hi,

I checked on my python today and found that the thermostat won't turn off. The temp was around 32C in the enclosure at midday and is currently 33C. The heat has been turned off all afternoon.

What can I do for a temporary fix until I can get the thermostat replaced? Python is a Childreni.

The faulty thermostat is the one on the left and controls the light on the left and the ceramic heat lamp in the center. The thermostat on the right controls the light on the right and can not be used without the fleuro(sp) being on.

It's the early morning temps I'm more concerned about.

Thanks for your help.

That is a amazingly complicated set up you have there.

Yeah i would be going with turning the heat off completely for the short term.

I would go to a better quality thermostat too.

You could use a lower wattage bulb if you arent too keen to have no heat.

Hope that helps a bit. Dont panic though

Cheers

I had the same thing with a customer today - thermostat only shut off at below 10 and the enclosure was sitting over 30.
Use the other side to control the heat swap the heat globe on the left so the right thermostat will shut off when it get to hot

I do have a lower wattage globe (40W). The one on the left is 60W. The ceramic is 60W. I don't use the one on the right.

The enclosure was originally set up for a Diamond that I never bought.

Here are the forecast temps for Horsham for the next few days.

Horsham
Tonight and Tuesday
Min 17 Max 34

Wednesday Mainly fine. Min 16 Max 33
Thursday Mainly fine. Min 15 Max 34
Friday Mainly fine. Min 18 Max 37

Essentially you could do away with both thermostats, and two heat lights.

For my childrens i use a fluoro and basking light on a timer. the basking light is 40 w

And i have a heat mat on a thermostat.

I would probably change to the 40 w globe and turn the rest of it off.

Then get a new enclosure, i am sure lizard king could knock one together for you, then you will need a diamond for that enclosure.

Just an idea is all

Cheers

Take out the bulbs being controled by the faulty thermostat, and just use the heating (use one of the ceramics instead of white light) controled by the working stat, if you have to run the fluro forthe other working stat to operate, remove the fluro tube.

For the short term or even the long term....

tall enclosure like that for your little childreni doesn't need a thermostat. I would leave a 40 watt ceramic going 24/7 and turn the fluro on when you want to see him at night. There should be a pronounced thermal gradient in that enclosure already with the height and hide spots etc

I would loose the wine rack a disaster waiting to happen. With the heat we have had I have not had any tanks on.

The pic was taken before I put the snake in. I have news paper on the floor. Have removed the bread bin (Chillie found a hidy spot in there where I couldn't get her out). Wine rack now sits on the floor. There is a cave hide on the left shelf and a container used as a hide on the floor.

Thanks for your replies. I will look into replacing the thermostat and modifying the basking (right) light and the fluro so I can run the basking light without running the fluro.

Just wire all your heating up to the one thermostat that works, two thermostats is overkill.

Leave the fluro off temporarily, so u disconnect the 2nd thermo. Most pythons aren't that desperate for UVB (the occasional trip outside will give them all they need in the short term). If you're not comfortable with the idea of leaving the heating shut down, change to 25w globes, & put the main power lead on a 24hr timer, set to turn on around 1am & off again at 7.am, That'll give you a gentle heat during the coldest period of the night, without letting it build up over the heat of the day. Based on current weather trends, you'll have around a month to organise replacing the thermo before the cold nights really start to kick in
