Feeding during Shed?

Hi All,

Just after peoples opinions, my Bredli python is due for a feed tonight, but her eyes went milky yesterday, so I'm not going to feed her until she sheds.

Does anybody still feed their snake anyway? The way I figure it, is if they were wild, they would be tucking themselves away in a small space until they shed, becuase they are at their must vulnerable, so just wondering what other people do

Thanx!

neens.

RE: Feeding during Shed?

in my experiance with feeding/shedding (*disclamer : I dont have much) is that a snake wont even strike at its food... none of my snakes do, well 1 strikes but only in self defence he lets go straight away... i generally try and feed 3 days to a week after shed...

Why wait so long to feed after a shed?

Should only have to wait for as long as it takes to defrost something

I sometimes offer food regardless, most will reject but some will take it, however if the eyes are really cloudy it's a waste of time and best to wait till after the shed.

RE: Re: RE: Feeding during Shed?

Is there ever a right or a wrong answer? I normally wait until it has finished shedding. One of my childreni's struggled during a shed once as the skin around the neck area was tight and it had trouble. JMO

RE: Re: RE: Feeding during Shed?

All of my snakes will eat if i offer them food during a shed however, as MattQld83 mentioned they can have trouble shedding around the lump. I had a woma that after it fed, it then shed two hours later.......the effect was something that looked like an elastic band that was so rediculously tight around its waist, that i had to use nail scissors to cut the tight excess skin while bathing it in lukewarm water to get the rest of the shed off. It was not one of my brightest moments and i was really only lucky in that i always check on my babies an hour or two after they feed. I dread to think of what would have happened had i gone and checked on her the following morning.

I don't feed during this period, although some of my snakes would probably eat regardless. If you do offer and they don't eat you have wasted a good rat, and if you don't breed the rats yourself it can start getting costly. Another few days before feeding is not going to hurt the snake at all, and I find they will eat straight after shedding, so no need to wait another 3 days.

If one of mine is due to shed when it is also due to feed I offer them food and they almost without fail take the food. I tend not to feed big meals anyway so the lump is no problem. It's a personal preference really as it doesn't really affect the snake one way or another.

With mine, if they want it, they can have it. The dinner lumps are never big enough to worry them while shedding.

I feed all my Pythons during this period , usually the day after their eyes clear up . Give ém a stretch to help pop that skin off . I don't feed large meals so I don't have the problem of the skin getting stuck but it has happened , just a little asistance & their on their way .

Thanx for your opinions, I'm still not going to feed her though, I'm sure one week without food wont hurt her!
