I have a new coastal and he(as other I have read about) is
not interested in the the "pinkie rat", after braining it ,defrosting it with a mouse,
scenting it with a feather and making it dance for him!!! Still nothing....
I left the pinkie over night but it was still there this morning.
My question is how long should I leave the pinkie in there?
Can I re-freeze it?
If I try next week and have same result, should I just fead him 2 x pinky mice?
Thanks in Advance.

Both of my Coastal hatchies started on small mice, and the bigger female moved on to pinky rats without a problem.
The male however is a different story...
I can thaw them with a mouse, wipe them through my gecko enclosure and pop their skulls but all the male will do is strike at it & coil, then release it.
He's done this for 2 weeks now, but with the drop in temps, I'm not overly concerned (yet).
Personally, I won't refreeze a rat, but considering what I described I do to them above, do I really want to?

What is the temps of the enclosure?
How big is the enclosure that it is in?

The enclosure is 60cm x 30cm x 30cm and has a 31c heat end and 23c cool end and I have
had him for a week , so he may need more time but was told he was due to eat so thought I's try.
Was concerned that if I left the pinky in there to long would harvest bacteria and that sort of
thing I have read many threads on feeding but dont know about frozen food and that so any
opionion welcome |

Just keep offering food every week or second week. Don't stress. They can go a while without food. Being cooler months he may not want to eat as much now. I still have all the temps turned up in my tanks, and they don't eat as much.

| | | | Why try pinkie rats? What's wrong with mice to begin with? I've always grown my pythons out on mice , from pink/fuzzy to adult mice, then on to small weaner rats from there. There is no good reason why you can't use mice until the snake is able to eat small rats. There are some stories around about the greater nutritional value of rats compared to mice, but for a growing python it makes no difference at all. Most hatchie carpets really prefer fuzzy or very small weaner mice for first feeds - they seem to like a bit of fur on their food, and you'll be surprised at what they can swallow (within reason of course).
Good luck with mice! And yes, remove and discard them after 12 hours or so (unless you've got lacies!), especially if they've been at the warm end of the cage. Do not re-freeze.
Cheers, Jamie. |

When I bought him they where being changed over to them I guess that, the nutritional info and i figured the sooner that he accepts them
the easier it would be. But if you say there's no difference I can continue feeding him mice if it comes to it.
So from pinky mice(which hes been eating) the next step could be to fuzzy weaner mice?
Thanks Craig for all your imput and everyone else for the opinions |

As a newby the excitment of my first snake is still going and I just feed "Bam" a pinkie
mouse and he ate it as he has and then I offered him a pinkie rat (the topic of this forum)
that was brained & defrosted with the mouse and "BAM" he smashed it.
This is the first time he showed interest and he didnt take much time swallowing it iether which leads
me to another question how much do you fead?
He has a big lump but is there a rough guide he is 3 months? | | | |
