Feeding (Pinkie info wanted)

Nice one mate I only have a small spotted python, but i feed him when he passes the food (poo's) which is about every 4 or 5 days....
Good to hear your little one is settled in and feeding.....
I was told to try to get my little guy feeding on Rats, but have had no luck yet. He loves mice tho :wink:
Next time u feed him, just offer him a rat pinkie alone, if its not gone by the morning replace it with a mouse and see if it makes a difference..... Iv heard of some snakes regurgitating rats,as some dont like the taste, but as you know, they seem to do better fed on rats, but its no problem if he wont take them, just stay with mice. Next stage up from pinkie mice is fuzzie mice, then the weaners.

I'm curious as to why keepers think young snakes "seem to do better on rats" - in all the literature I've read, there is no evidence for that at all, regardless of whatever the nutritional differences may be. The only reason I move up to rats is because mice are becoming too difficult for a snake to handle. if you fed mice to one snake, and the same weight of rats to a similar snake, you would not be able to tell the difference in their growth rates (except that some snakes just grow a bit faster regardless of how much they're fed...)

if you feed the same weight in rats and mice, the snake that eats only rats will grow quicker than the snake only eating mice. Rats are a much better food source IMO, especially when out of the pinky stage, mice are all fur and bones.
For anyone wanting to get mice feeders on to rats,- just mash up a pink mouse and rub some on the rat, or if you breed them put a pink rat in some used mice substraight for 10 min.
