Getting Beardies on the vegies

Got a baby beardie (again) as the last one perished tragically but how can I get them onto chopped vegies and stuff. Hes only about 5 inches long. I dont want to feed him just crickets cause im worried he will get impacted . I got juvenile food but how do I get him started on alternatives?

Hay mate. There is a rule of thumb. Feed them food the size of the space between their eyes to avoid impaction. Usually as infants they will only eat live insects. They are really attracted to the movement. It took me around 3 to 4 months to get my bubs to eat a decent amount of veggies so I could take them off live insects. I just started by offering veggies every day or two. Bright coloured fresh with something sweet on top. I use squash (the bright yellow one), with some leafy greens (like fresh basil leaves, hibiscus leaves, alphalfa sprouts, or a small amount of fancy lettuce), cooked sweet potato, or green beans. Then i cut up a small amount of nectrine or strawberries to put on top. They usually will come up and lick it out of interest. Once they realise its food they run up to the glass when they see their food bowl. There is an awesome beardie food guide available online ill find the link.

Another method I have used is to feed up a good amount of live crix dusted with calcium. Then after a day or two get a food bowl you can use everyday and put some thawed frozen crix dusted with calcium in the bowl (you may need to tong feed initially). If they start eating them great and then each day hide veggies under the thawed crix. They eventually learn to recognise their food bowl and will eat almost anything you put in it. However you will need to adjust their food as you go. I find some of my lizards like green some like yellow some like orange. Fussy little buggars! Hope this helps. http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtrem...Nutrition.html

Yep, I just leave veges in their enclosure every chance I get (hard to be motivated to chop something up you know they are probably not going to touch though!) and eventually they will eat.

Dropping water on the nose will encourage them to lick....
when licking hand feed wet greens..eg bok choy leaf..i use the droplets of water from the leaf
so when there mouth is open put a corner of the leaf in....presto !
hand fed vegie eater!
other than basil...small amounts as high in iron like spinach ,i also use mint & parsley..with not too much stem
my adults & juvies still like being hand fed veg!

I find dropping small pieces in from top encourages them to eat, they think its something live.

At a young age you are safe feeding them 80% live and 20% vege. Leave it in the cage and if they feel the need they will eat, you can't force it. If they aren't touching their vege at around six months, you can try not feeding live for a few days and see if this prompts them to see what's in the dish. I wouldn't be too stressed about them not eating vege for a while yet.

Hi Dl, I don't use a set method. They get live and vege offered every day until 1 year. From around there I go to every second day and always have the vege in there. They are checked to make sure they are not losing conditioning during any change up or down and seperated into a different enclosure and returned to what was happening until I try again. At two I try to drop live to every second day or so, but keep vege in there daily. My only adult at the moment (4yrs) has vege every second day, and doesn't always eat it and has live every second/third day as he's not as active.

Dandelion flowers (the yellow ones) are a real go for mine. According to the online beardie nutrition BIBLE (http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtrem...Nutrition.html) by which I swear, they're a great staple.

Once they've had one of them I find they'll take anything green I put in their face. Generally though there's no tricking required - beardies know what they need.

Hi D/A... my hatchies get put in their live woodie/cricket feedtank up to 5 times pr day...
fresh greens replaced every day
at 8 weeks they get 4 feeds pr dat & replaced fresh greens
at 16 wks they get 2-3 feeds per day...& greens
at 20 wks... they have 6 days live feeding & greens....& 1 greens only day
depending on growth...
currently my 7mnth old gets... live, greens/live, live, greens/live,greens.... live ,greens/live,live,greens/live,greens etc
so every 4th day is just greens
currently my 16 mnth old juvies & adults have live, nil, greens, nil, live, nil, greens, nil, live... thus eating live or greens every 4 days
trust me they are not starving!...very strong ... stocky dragons... wish i can put up picks!
the juvies - adults consume from... 2-5 rat velvets... from... 15 -100 woodies or crickets... & hell knows how many mealworms on live feed day...
if you give adult sized dragons snacks every day .... the snack.....they dont eat a meal
any way we all do it different... either way as long as it benifits the animal...who cares!

leave the salad on his basking area, to the side of the light,..that way hes constantly seeing it and hes more likely to nibble @ it.

offer salad first, then roaches/crix a bit later.

Get them started on "fine" vegies, such as chopped clover, dandelion and other flower petals and fine chopped young dandelion leaves, avoid hard vegies like carrot, pumpkin ect untill older and bigger. Beardies should eat greens at 3 - 5 days old, if they don't, it's probably you heating / housing at fault. Don't expect them to eat greens like they do bugs though, and bugs is what they need more of for rapid growth.
