Yep, I'd stick to paper towel or newspaper. It's not worth the risk of impaction.

Plenty of people use sand for hatchies and adults (more commonly adults), its just a chance of impaction. For mine (now adults) throughout their life, theyve had Astroturf/ Artificial Grass.

Ive heard rumours of the pieces of grass cutting the Cloaca interior when the animal is defecating but never had any problems here!

Mine have been on marine carpet for several months now and are just as happy as when they were on sand. Its softer than astroturf and no ingestion problems like sand.

I no longer use any loose substrate my beardies, I use tiles most of my enclosures, though 1 still has sand in it. Hatchies should only be kept on paper or tiles till at least 15cm TL. Tiles stops insects from hiding, thats is the papers downfall

Your tiles must be a perfect fit and very flat on the bottom, or my small crickets are very smart!
