Hi guys, I just got my new little Blonde Spotted python hatchling today and when i was setting up the click clack with the heat mat and thermostat i noticed the hot end of it where the heat mat is, the thermostat is reading around 40 degrees.. Which i know is far too hot..
I put some newspaper on top of the heat mat to try cool it down a bit but it only went down 1 or 2 degrees..
So how can i get it down to a good temperature for the warm end? Should i put something under the click clack (like more newspaper) to try iunsulate it more?
Any help would be good!

Do you have a thermostat or just a thermometer?

Buy a probe thermostat and you will have complete control over the temperature of the heat pad.

thermostats are fairly expensive though arent they? The only one i saw while at the pet shop while buying my thermometer was well over $100

Look on line for your thermostats instead of paying pet store prices. a microclimate ministat100 is well under $100.
Little amount of money for piece of mind....

Ill have a look into thermostats. What are some good websites to look at?
Until then ive made some spacers to lift the click clack off the heat mat, its gone down a few degrees, hopefully it will keep going down!

again you dont need a thermostate you just need to raise your tub of the mat a bit . its prety simple and will cost you nothing and the best bit you can do it right now
or better still just put a bit less heat mat under the click clack
PS if your going to buy a thermostate buy microclimate thay are the best around

Don't need a thermostat? The temperature a heat pad produces is dependent on the ambient room temperature. For example, depending on wattage, a heat pad may sit at 35 degrees when the ambient temp is 25 degrees, that's 10 degrees above ambient temp. This means that during a 10 degree night the heat pad will be sitting at 20 degrees and on a 35 degree day the heat pad will be sitting at 45 degrees. So if the room the snake is housed in is exposed to temperature extremes of 15-35 degrees (which is quite normal), the temperature of your heat pad is going to be varying from 20-45 degrees at different times of the season/day/night. So unless the ambient temp of the room in which your snake is housed remains very stable throughout the entire year, i would highly recommend you spend a few dollars on a decent probe thermostat.

ok so the spacers seem to have worked a bit. I found another thermometer and put it in and they are different!
The original brand new exo terra is reading 32.9 degrees and the other one i put in to compare with is 30.5 degrees... ahh im confused now!
Is 33 degrees to hot for the ground on the hot end?

i would really buy a thermostat. then you dont really need to worry about anything i had so much trouble with temp when mine broke and waiting for it to come was nerve racking. i had to check it often to make sure it wasnt getting to hot. save urself the trouble and just fork out the money. you can get a really good one that u can use with light and heat mats and will be very useful in the furute. i would go for microclimate.
here is a good website where i got mine http://www.ultimatereptiles.com.au/i...id=2&Itemid=34
and i think 33 is alright
