Dan, trust you to be cheeky.

Heatmat best underneath the enclosure. it will heat through. Or you can put it inside but then you'll probably need to drill a hole for the cord to go through, but I prefer heat cord and its always outside my enclosures

Put it on the floor with a tile on top of it. the tile will act as a heat bank. The cord can just come though the door unless its a really small snake which can get out of the crack left by the cord.

put it on a thermostat. i recently had a opti heat mat that fryed and almost started a fire. it melted and and burnt the desk it was stiiting on. IM NOT BLAMING THE PRODUCT BUT I AM BLAMING MYSELF FOR NO THERMOSTAT unless it was a faulty one. i guess it just happens sometimes. if it was a school day my house would probably not be standing.

so the moral of the story is PUT A HEAT MAT ON A THERMOSTAT

Your correct about that matt.
I have had a heatmat shoot sparks.... and it WAS hooked to a thermostat set on 32C degrees!!!!
The problem was... i had the heatmat inside my cage and snake wee had corroded something and made it short out
I hate to think what WOULD of happend if i wasnt home

I have now replaced all my heatmats with heatcords as they are waterproof.

Heres a pic of the shoty heatmat.

Bill.

Just my opinion, but we prefer to use basking lights for all enclosures (excepts our hatchies) If you have a cover on them then the snake can't burn itself, urintate on it etc. Also it's great if you put a piece of slate or something similar directly under as it will heat the top and bottom of the snake. And it's a wooden cage so attaching one should be fairly simple!
