I haven't used them myself, but I know some people have had bad experience with heat rocks overheating and burning their beardie. Depending on where you live, you may not need to heat your beardies overnight anyway. Usually a heat globe and UV light both switched on for 10-12 hours per day will suffice, at least that's what I use...

I live in adelaide so at the moment its pritty cold but in my room which is the most likely place for it to live it is alot warmer than outside and in summer it is hot here so i am thinking it should be not too much of a hassel then.

I dont really think a heat rock is necesarry, i have heard a few stories where they resulted in burns. I tend to think the other heat sources (heat matts, heat cord, and the various bulbs) are better.

At night a heat matt is definatly enough. During the day you should probably have a basking light aswell though (I would suggest buying regular light globes from a supermarket as opposed to the specialty reptile ones).

i have used heat rocks for many years without a problem. all boils down to personal preference.
i dont believe that beardies need a heat rock though, just a good heat lamp and uv light is more than enough |

dragons do not neet heat at night. none of my dragons/skinks or lizards get kept warm at night, even the hatchies go without. and it sometimes hits about 3 degrees here at night. u only need a good heat light during the day.

I'm in S W Vic so it gets colder at night than Adelaide usually. My beardies get both uv and basking light/heat during the day but both go off at night. The rock under the basking area absorbs heat thru the day and takes ages to drop off overnight. I agree with grimbeny on lighting I use the R80 60W light avail from Safeway etc. Both cheap and effective. Mine seem to be happy with that set up.
