Hi all,
I have had a mixed discussion with people on what is the best method with heating of your reptiles at night. I only have a variety of juvenile snakes that currently I heat 24/7 with a thermostat on 1/4 of their enclosures - and will be moving these guys into new homes very shortly.
My question to the experienced people are, what is the best method for heating. Do I heat them 24/7, or do I just heat through the day and not the night, or vice versa? My aim is to have stress-free healthy snakes so your advise will be very valuable. I am not breeding with these as they are all still underage for hanky panky - though in the future it will be a different story and I realise there are different heating rules when it comes to that. Though just every day keeping of them what do you suggest?
Thanks

How old are your snakes? Personally I heat my bubs under 1 year of age 24 hours (with a gradient of course), but after that they all get heat only during the day, however, I live in NQ and temps up here don't require much heat anyway. Where are you located?

between 6 and 8 months old, they are currently still in click clacks with the heat cord - though plan is to move them into slightly larger enclosures - hence the question on how I should heat them.
All feedback is appreciated, though would love to hear from those who have been doing this for a long time with good success etc.

My 7 month-old python has constant heat, with a gradient. She moves when she gets too hot or cold. This method is working well for me (and her, obviously). |

If they are too young to breed keep them heated at night, in saying that it is fine to drop them by a few degrees at night though, but nothing too drastic.
But as tan says if you are up North you can get away without it.

I am in Brisbane, sorry just updated my profile.
Inside it has been dropping to around 15deg at night, though keeping their enclosures at between 28-32deg day and night consistantly at the warm end.
So is the consensus that it is ok for them to drop in temperature at night time and warm through the day? Or if I have the equipment and ability to keep them at a consistant temperature in their warm section should I do so?
Thanks!

Personally I would keep them with a warm end for a while longer. They are still young.

My basking lights have their output adjusted (dimmers or just changing the wattage of the halogen globes I use) to set the daytime high. The overnight low is controlled by under tile heating which is controlled by a probe thermostat.
During the winter/cooling the duration of the basking "on/day" time is adjusted to match sun up and sun down.
I have experimented with light sensors to turn on the enclosure lights automatically when it is daylight outside which works pretty well but I still have some technical issues to work out.
Some of my enclosures are on the Herp Shop web site under the Care Sheets section - see Tiled Enclosure and a gecko one and you will get the idea.
Habistat make thermostats that you can configure to have a night time drop in temperature.
