Heating Beardies

I have a friend who is housesitting and there are a couple of adult beardies at the house. I noticed when I was there the other day that the heat source (black 150w globe) was no longer working, so other than the fluro tube which is on a daylight cycle, the only form of heat these guys had was a heat rock.

Me being me, went out and bought a 75w infrared exoterra globe because I didn't think that the heat lamp was connected to a thermostat or any sort of timer for that matter and being a enclosure that is built into the wall, I couldn't get to the back to confirm.I didn't want to get anything stronger - the store I went to didn't have any black globes and I didn't want to get a ceramic at 150 watts just incase it got too hot as there are no thermometers to check the temps. I've got some baby beardies on the way and during the week my copy of The Bearded Dragon Manual arrived and it says, "the primary source of heat should be a white (not red) incandescent bulb", which has stressed me out a bit because I don't want to harm the beardies at all.

Would I have caused the beardies any harm? The infrared globe has been on 24/7 since Sunday. I didn't want to buy a white globe at the time because as I said, the heat source isn't connected to a timer, so I thought infrared wouldn't disturb them so much of a night (as per snakes).

I'm going back tonight and I've actually bought a moonlight (blue) 75 watt exoterra globe to replace the red one with. Will this be ok? Why should red lights be avoided? The book doesn't give any reason. I just want to do the right thing for the beardies and the owners won't be back for another 7 weeks so don't want them to suffer.

Sorry for the long post!!

Bearded dragons are highly diurnal and love light, thus the need for their basking light to be bright. Red or blue lights will not harm them in any way, esp if they don't have a timer. though heating them 24 / 7 will have their metabolisms at a faster rate, and will need to be fed more. There is no need to get "reptile" brand light bulbs, any bright spot globe is fine.
